LegalHerald.com reports on recent news that testimony from a Johnson & Johnson biochemist during trial showed that the pharmaceutical giant had hidden certain study results connecting its antipsychotic drug, Risperdal, to the development of dangerous hormonal levels in patients.

Risperdal is an antipsychotic drug which was approved by the FDA to treat young patients with autism, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia in adolescents and adults. For several years, it was not approved as a treatment for children but was later expanded to include this use.

The new controversial testimony was discussed in an article from New Brunswick Today, which noted details of a February trial that had taken place. The trial culminated when a jury voted to award the Alabama plaintiff with $2.5 million in compensation for certain side effects he reportedly suffered after using Risperdal as a child.

Janssen Pharmaceuticals is the manufacturer of Risperdal and a subdivision of Johnson & Johnson corporation. They reportedly funded a 2003 study which concluded that it had discovered no connection between long-term risperidone treatment in patients and the development of elevated prolactin levels. It was also noted that three of the study’s authors were Janssen employees and two of the study’s independent authors have since requested a reanalysis of the study’s findings.

During the February trial, evidence reportedly showed a manuscript of the study in question which included two tables connecting use of the drug to elevated prolactin levels which can cause the development of gynecomastia--a breast development condition in males which has been linked to the drug by plaintiffs in multiple lawsuits. These tables and the important information on them, however, reportedly never made it to the FDA or to publication.

The attorneys of Banville Law understand well how concerning these emerging allegations are for patients currently using Risperdal.
