AbuseGuardian.com reports on the arrest of a former high school teacher for allegedly having an inappropriate relationship with one of her students. Gwinnett County police arrested her on Tuesday, March 1st, 2016 on charges of sexual assault.
The woman was a language arts teacher at Mill Creek High School, and during the Thanksgiving break, one of her student’s parents allegedly accused her of having a relationship with their 17-year-old son. After discovering text messages on their son’s phone, the parents allegedly told the teacher to resign from her job, or they would contact authorities with their allegations. Authorities were contacted when the teacher returned to school after the break, and on December 9th, 2015 the teacher resigned from her position. According to police, the teen said that he and his teacher had begun to have sexual contact outside of school, and she had once even picked him up from his home.
Sexual abuse can shatter lives, and abusers often prey on those most vulnerable, such as minors. Victims of assault are often plagued with feelings of guilt or shame, and minors can frequently become confused as to whether or not they should tell another adult. This can make reporting very difficult for victims, and may delay contact being made to the authorities. According to RAINN, 68% of all sexual assaults go unreported to police; and 44% of victims are under the age of 18.
Attorney Brian Kent understands the seriousness of sexual assault allegations. He commented on this arrest by stating, “While every individual is innocent until proven guilty, abusers can often be attracted to positions of authority, such as those in the teaching profession. It is our responsibility as a society to support victims of abuse, and to work to prevent these incidents from occurring in the future.” Attorney Kent and his firm are devoted to giving each survivor individual attention and compassion. The firm sponsors the online resource AbuseGuardian.com and is currently representing several clients in claims of sexual assault.
