Cornerstone Chemical Company Empowers Louisiana Students Through 2023 HBCU Innovation Internship Program

Cornerstone Chemical Company, a leading chemical manufacturer in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, is proud to announce its participation in the 2023 Louisiana HBCU Innovation Internship Program, in collaboration with Greater New Orleans, Inc. (GNO, Inc.).

This exciting initiative aims to foster innovation, entrepreneurship, and professional development among historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) students in Louisiana.

The HBCU Internship Program, a carefully designed program in conjunction with Xavier University of Louisiana, Dillard University, and Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO), goes beyond the typical internship experience. It serves as a stepping stone for young minds, providing them with invaluable work experience for careers in STEM.

Through this paid internship program, 12 juniors and seniors from partnering HBCUs in Louisiana are selected to work closely with STEM-centric operations, gaining firsthand experience beyond the confines of the classroom. The program focuses on three core areas: training the next generation of successful entrepreneurs of color, inspiring students to become innovative change-makers, and increasing the number of regional startup firms in Louisiana.

During their tenure at Cornerstone Chemical Company from May 30 to July 21, 2023, interns participated in a transformative learning experience. Two interns were assigned to Cornerstone Chemical Company's medical department, where they gained valuable insights into occupational nursing and supported plant nurses in their daily routines. This included observing nurses while they conducted OSHA-mandated employee physicals, vision and hearing tests, and EKGs (echocardiograms).

These interns also had the opportunity to familiarize themselves with Cornerstone Chemical Company's team and medical setting, experiencing various medical situations and learning firsthand about healthcare in an industrial environment. They coordinated and managed employee physical examinations to coincide with the provider visits to the clinic and actively participated in organizing wellness events that promoted employee health. Interns assisted on-site nurse practitioners in obtaining essential vital signs, such as blood pressure, heart rate, height, and weight.

Cornerstone Chemical Company also hosted one Strategic Engagement and Communication Intern. During her time with the site, the intern created social media posts, assisted with a biannual newsletter publication, and created promotional videos.

At the culmination of the 2023 internship program, GNO Inc. recognized Cornerstone Chemical Company's interns with a closing ceremony for their dedication and hard work throughout the summer. Their accomplishments are a testament to the impact this program is making by empowering young minds and paving the way for a brighter future for the next generation of leaders.
