Spanish Royal Pearls Auction Triggers Interest in Pearl Jewelry

This week, a single strand of natural black, bronze, and grey pearls went up for auction at Christie’s. The jewelry once belonged to Queen Isabella II of Spain during the 1800s, and in 1960 the pearls were offered at Christie’s in London as the property of Frank H. Hargrove, Esq. Since that time, the pearls have remained in the family until placed up for auction this year, and the value of the pearls has been estimated at $750,000 - $1 million USD.

The necklace is just over 18” long and contains 43 of the original 46 natural pearls in a dark multicolor combination, which is thought to have taken years to have collect.

Natural pearls have become harder to find, commanding higher prices. Pearl enthusiasts today often purchase cultured pearls that offer similar appearances with better luster, undulled over time.

Miriam Reed, owner of Pearl Distributors a high end pearl jewelry store that specializes in internet sales, said, “The easiest way to get a pearl necklace somewhat similar in appearance to the Spanish Royal Pearl Necklace would be to buy a multicolored Tahitian pearl necklace in the greys, black, and bronze tones of the famous natural pearls.”

The large center pearl in the famous necklace measures 13.8mm and the necklace is graduated, with the smallest pearls near the clasp measuring 6.5mm. “Tahitian pearls are the best option for recreating a similar looking necklace because of their size and color,” said Reed.

Pearl Distributors specialize in high quality pearl jewelry, custom making each piece to the customers’ specifications. More information can be found at http://www.pearldistributors.com.
