NurseRegistry, a nurse staffing agency in Palo Alto, CA, has revealed that Jessica Flores, one of their team members, was diagnosed with breast cancer in late 2022. As a show of support, NurseRegistry has donated $1,000 to breast cancer awareness. Furthermore, NurseRegistry has collaborated with LympheDIVAS and Amoena, which are organizations that produce clothing and garments for women with breast cancer, to create a Boobtique in a Box, which provides various items from both brands for Jess.

Jessica Flores says, “If you feel something off, be paranoid. Get it checked out. Stay on top of your health because you never know. Cancer takes so much from you.” In Jess’s case, it took her breasts, her hair, and many elements of her daily lifestyle. “You must find ways to stay joyful and humorous in life.”

She noted that she had always taken care of her health - exercising, eating healthy, and only drinking moderately. Nevertheless, she was diagnosed with stage 2B invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC), which starts in the milk ducts and becomes invasive once it gets out of the milk duct and reaches the neighboring tissue. It was later discovered that the cancer was hormone-based, which has the ability to spread much faster in pre-menopausal women like her. She had undergone chemotherapy and has recently started with a new chemotherapy drug known as Taxol. She is grateful for having a supportive family and having a connection with a group of survivors of the same type of cancer. She says, “This is like a sisterhood. No one fights alone. We are so close and it has been my saving grace.”

Meanwhile, Sharman Lorimer, one of the care coordinators at NurseRegistry, has a lot of experience in mastectomy care and fittings. She used her experience and skills to assist in the creation of the Boobtique in a Box, which contained some support garments that may help in enhancing Jess’s quality of life from day to day. The items in the box were: a Lymphedivas arm sleeve, a Lymphedivas gauntlet, four Amoena breast forms, Amoena bras, and Amoena tank tops.

LympheDIVAs, one of the organizations that provided garments for Jess, was launched in Philadelphia by breast cancer survivors Rachel Troxell and Robin Miller, who had lymphedema, which was a side effect of their treatment which resulted in permanent arm swelling. Having discovered that the available compression sleeves were unattractive, uncomfortable, and limited, they decided to work with fashion designer Kristin Dudley to come up with a more comfortable and elegant compression sleeve.

Amoena was founded in 1975 and has since gained the reputation of being a trustworthy partner in breast care and restoring women’s self-confidence after breast cancer. The company is known for its high-quality standards, design, and innovation, as shown by its many patents for manufacturing methods and materials. Their range of products are constantly being improved based on the feedback they have been receiving from women with breast cancer and specialist retailers. Currently, the company has already sold 34 million breast care textiles and 17 million breast forms, which were all designed to help boost the self-confidence and quality of life of their customers.
