Chicago, Illinois -

STD dating website MeetPositives.com is drawing attention to the latest development in the quest to find a cure for HIV/AIDS wherein a 66-year-old man from California has been cured of the deadly disease.

The California man, who has been dubbed the “City of Hope” patient, is the oldest person to have been cured of HIV. The announcement came on Monday 1st August 2022, at the 24th International AIDS Conference that took place in Montreal. The patient was diagnosed with HIV in 1988, started ART (Antiretroviral Therapy) in the mid-1990s, and was diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia in 2018.

The patient received a stem cell transplant from a donor with a rare mutation in early 2019. The mutation, named CCR5-delta-32, deletes the receptors that most strains of HIV use to enter the cells. The patient continued ART for two years after the transplant. Finally, 3 years after the stem cell transplant and 17 months after stopping ART, the patient remains free of HIV. Moreover, his leukemia has also remained in remission.

In an official statement, Tommy Marks, spokesperson for the HIV dating website Meet Positives, talked about the effect that the “City of Hope” patient’s recovery from HIV/AIDS is going to have on those suffering from the virus all around the world.

Tommy said, “Globally, nearly 38.4 million people were living with HIV by the end of 2021, according to statistics from the WHO. For all of them, this news brings a ray of hope that they too can one day be free of this deadly affliction and reclaim their life. Moreover, the fact that the cell transplant treatment worked as well as it did, despite the age of the patient, gives others in their twilight years some hope that they too can enjoy a few years of freedom before they shuffle off this mortal coil. We do not doubt that everyone living with HIV today is paying close attention to this news and is hoping that this treatment approach could finally be the key to long-term HIV remission. In the meanwhile, if you are HIV-positive, we urge you to not keep your life on hold while waiting for the science to catch up and the cure to become mainstream. With Meet Positives, you can meet other HIV-positive singles who are facing the same challenges as you. Hopefully, you can find some common ground with them to start long and fruitful relationships. Today, there are over 1.2 million individuals in the United States living with HIV with around 1 in 8 of them being unaware that they are HIV-positive. The virus is transferred through bodily fluids and, thus, sexual intercourse is one of the primary methods of transmission. Historically, gay and bisexual men have been at the greatest risk of contracting the virus.

The history of the fight against HIV/AIDS is long and fraught. When it first spread in the western world in the 1970s, little was known about the virus’s mechanism due to its long incubation time. By the 1980s, the virus had gained mainstream attention and was being stigmatized as a “gay disease.” Those who suffered from it in the United States were ostracized from society, in no small part due to that period’s prevalent homophobia.

The CDC’s (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) report of unusual clusters of Pneumocystis pneumonia in a newsletter on June 5, 1981, is officially recognized as the start of the AIDS epidemic. The introduction of Antiretroviral Therapy in the mid-1990s was the first glimmer of optimism for HIV-positive individuals. The latest update on the promising recovery of the “City of Hope” patient will likely be a new chapter in the fight against the deadly disease that has been waged for over 4 decades.
