Jerry Ellis of Ellis-Lopez Travel has launched an initiative in the spirit of Juneteenth to provide contemporary meaning to the holiday. This holiday, which is celebrated every June 19th, is meant to commemorate the effective end of slavery in the US. This year, Jerry Ellis is introducing a long-term initiative designed to add new revenue streams to this initiative by developing a give back ecosystem among small businesses. Ellis-Lopez is a travel agency in Germantown, MD, that provides a comprehensive suite of travel products.

Jerry Ellis was a recipient of debt forgiveness as a sophomore and he has made a commitment to give back 1,000 times of that gift that he had received. This is in connection with a tradition of student debt reduction that is being provided at Clark Atlanta University where student debt was decreased by $2 million in 2021.

June 19th is significant because it was the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, TX, in 1865 to grab control of the state to make sure all of the enslaved people are freed. The arrival of the troops came two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth honors this end of slavery in the country and is regarded as the longest-running African American holiday. It was only on June 17, 2021 that it was officially declared as a federal holiday.

The Emancipation Proclamation was issued by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863. However, in reality, this proclamation failed to instantly free any enslaved people. This was because it only applied to places that were under Confederate control and not to slave-holding border states or rebel areas that were already under the control of the Union. The reality was that, as the Northern troops conquered areas in the Confederate South, many of the enslaved people fled behind Union lines. It was only after the war came to a close in 1865, when General Granger and his troops arrived in Galveston that signaled freedom for the 250,000 slaves in Texas. A year later, the freedmen in Texas organized the celebration of “Jubilee Day” on June 19.

Jerry Ellis explains, “Because of this generosity that I received when my student debt was reduced, I am giving back through my travel agency. Juneteenth is a historic milestone of emancipation. The travel multiplier program that I have instituted will allow folks to book their travel plans through my comprehensive offerings and have the satisfaction of emancipating students from the crushing weight of student debt without paying a cent. You see I will be contributing 50% of my commissions to a student debt reduction initiative at Clark Atlanta University.”

He has formally established a partnership with Clark Atlanta University, which is his alma mater, to formalize his pledge. He has also established a special online portal at caugives.com to monitor his giving, which will be 50 percent of all commissions that he receives. It is important to note that this initiative provides a Solomonic solution to sensitive national problem with a marketplace initiative.
