North Texas Plumbing, based in Watauga, TX, is pleased to be offering plumbing for medical gas to clients in the Dallas Fort Worth Area. Hospital administrators and medical practitioners that are in need of certified and experienced medical gas plumbers to build, repair or maintain the medical gas infrastructure in their medical facilities can now rely on the expertise of North Texas Plumbing.

When it comes to patient care, proper access to medical gasses is often a crucial aspect of the infrastructure in a medical facility. There are several gasses that are currently used in a medical setting at present, and these include oxygen, medical air, nitrous oxide, nitrogen, instrument air or surgical air, carbon dioxide, medical vacuum, waste anesthetic gas disposal or anesthetic gas scavenging system and other medical gas mixtures. Each serves a different — and yet equally critical role — in supporting patients through the difficult situations they may be in. Some of these gasses can be administered directly to a patient to help maintain normal respiratory function when they are unable to do so unassisted, or these gasses may be used to run several pieces of medical equipment that are providing auxiliary services which function as life support systems to a patient who is critically ill. In either scenario, fully functional medical gas piping is necessary to help save a patient’s life.

Oxygen is often administered to patients who need supplemental help via a mask. At large hospitals, which have hundreds of patients at any given time and have to provide oxygen to several intensive care units and operating theaters simultaneously, the equipment used is a vacuum-insulated evaporator or bulk tank. It stores a large volume of liquid oxygen onsite, which is then evaporated into a concentrated oxygen supply. In small medical centers with a smaller patient capacity, oxygen is usually supplied by a system of multiple high-pressure cylinders. In situations where a bulk system or high-pressure cylinder manifold is not suitable, oxygen may be supplied by an oxygen concentrator, which is a recent development in the on-site production of oxygen. North Texas Plumbing has the experience to install and maintain the necessary equipment in any of the given scenarios as well as any other a client may bring to their team.

Medical air is compressed air, supplied by a special air compressor through a dryer to maintain correct dew point levels and then distributed to patient care areas by specialty copper pipes. In smaller facilities, this may be supplied via high-pressure cylinders. Nitrous oxide is used in surgical suites for its anesthetic functions during preoperative procedures and is also delivered in high-pressure cylinders and supplied through the medical piping system. Though some bulk systems exist, they are no longer installed due to environmental concerns and a reduced usage of nitrous oxide. Nitrogen is used to power pneumatic surgical equipment during various procedures and is supplied by high-pressure cylinders.

Instrument air is also used to power surgical equipment and is generated on-site by an air compressor similar to a medical air compressor. It is typically used for insufflation during surgery and in laser surgeries. Medical vacuum in a hospital supports suction equipment and evacuation procedures, supplied by vacuum pump systems exhausting to the atmosphere. Waste anesthetic gas disposal, or the anesthetic gas scavenging system, is used in hospital anesthesia evacuation procedures. Although similar to a medical vacuum system, some building codes require anesthetic gasses to be scavenged separately and do not need to be as powerful as medical vacuum systems. The team at North Texas Plumbing are all experienced with medical plumbing, and are dedicated to providing a high standard of quality in any service they offer.
