ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Shadow Mountain Recovery, an addiction treatment center located in Albuquerque, N.M., recently published an article outlining the potential side effects of heroin a person may face when using the drug. The article was released with the goal of educating New Mexicans on the dangers of heroin use to both short-term and long-term health.
According to the New Mexico Department of Health, New Mexico ranks 12th in the country for overdose deaths, and two out of every three overdose deaths are directly tied to opioid use.
“Heroin is addictive because it provides an immediate rush of pleasure, joy, and often leads a person to float in and out of a state of consciousness,” a Shadow Mountain Recovery spokesperson said. “These feelings often leave the person wanting more and more heroin. This urge leads to increased tolerance to the drug and eventually dependence and addiction.”
As dependence and addiction set in from continued heroin use, the signs of physical and mental harm are seen more clearly.
According to the article, the impact of heroin on a person’s physical health depends on a number of factors. These factors include the person’s overall health, weight, gender, how much of the drug is used, length of use, method of use, and any underlying health conditions.
Based on these factors, side effects can include depression, anxiety, fatigue, muscle aches, nausea, restlessness, and many more.
