St. Louis, Missouri -
Jason P. Brinton, MD is featured prominently in a recent issue of the prestigious Ocular Surgery News (OSN) in an article about the growing trend toward office-based refractive cataract surgery.
The article is the latest in a series of OSN articles and editorials on office-based surgery. (The article is available in its entirety on OSN's partner website, Healio.com.) Dr. Brinton and other leading ocular surgeons discuss the benefits to patients and practitioners of moving refractive lens exchange, Visian ICL, and other eye surgery procedures away from the traditional hospital or ambulatory surgical center (ASC) setting and toward office-based surgery (OBS).
The publication, which will mark its 40th anniversary in 2022, is a subsidiary of SLACK Inc., a global leader in healthcare news, education, and management services. Dr. Brinton serves on the editorial board of OSN.
The focus on patient safety begins with how the issue of anesthesia is addressed in OBS versus an ASC, Dr. Brinton says: “As practitioners, we seek to provide the optimal amount of sedation, and too much can be just as concerning, if not more so, than too little. In a hospital/ASC setting, with an IV in place and CRNA in the room, patients are more likely to get sedative medications that are not needed. In office-based surgery, out of necessity, the team learns to be adept at providing a relaxing environment with music, handholding, and conversing with the patient – what we call vocal local.”
Dr. Jason P. Brinton is an internationally respected LASIK and refractive surgeon. He is a Harvard College graduate, a Harvard Medical School graduate, and is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology.
