London, UK – Once a year the London marathon inspires runners, both professional and amateur, to become participants and take up the sport of running.  For some, it will be a tick off the bucket list, for others serious lifelong change. In order to help Ealing runners, CK Physio (www.ckphysio.co.uk) has just published a new blog post authored by Bryan Kelly entitled 'Ealing Physiotherapy: Common Sports Injuries When Running Marathons'.

Most marathon participants and hopefuls suffer minor injuries such as cramps, blisters, skin chafing and subungual haematomas. The article discusses how the race now 'attracts 6,500 runners of all levels from London and beyond, and has established itself as a race not to miss in the running calendar' which is why 'top sports brand ASICS has just been unveiled as the Official Sportswear and Training Partner of the Ealing Half Marathon'.

According to the article, preparation is key in getting ready to run alongside thousands of people allowing one to limit or avoid common injuries. The article states that 'Muscle strains are commonly experienced after intense or prolonged exercises, especially if you haven’t done proper warm-ups. When the muscles in the groin, hamstrings, thighs, calves, and other parts of the body are overworked or stretched beyond their limit, the muscle tissues can tear. The damage translates to painful sensations and swelling in the area.' It also pointed out that another common injury is sprained ankles because 'the ligaments in the ankle are torn as the joint is rolled too outwardly, which could happen when running on uneven surfaces, or landing in awkward positions'.

Registered with the Health Professions Council, CKPhysio physiotherapists are Chartered members of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy. According to the article, CK Physio can help treat common runner's injuries through use of 'hot and cold treatments, manipulative or exercise therapy, and other techniques that can be administered to reduce the symptoms and restore the affected area’s function and range of movement'.
