Las Vegas, Nevada -

Dr. Matthew Swanic from the Las Vegas Eye Institute gave a talk to Woo University on the subject of modern refractive surgery options. Dr. Swanic is a native of Las Vegas who received his medical degree from the University of Nevada School of Medicine. He received his residency training in Ophthalmology at Tufts Medical Center, then completed a Jules Stein fellowship in Cornea, Refractive Surgery, and Uveitis. He is currently an active member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, as well as the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

In the talk with Woo University, Dr. Swanic spoke on current refractive surgery options. These include LASIK, as well as its alternate surgeries, including PRK, SMILE, ICL, and others. PRK, also known as Photo-Refractive Keratectomy, works well for surgical candidates with special considerations such as irregular or thin corneas. SMILE stands for Small Incision Lenticule Extraction and is effective on myopia, nearsightedness, and astigmatism. ICL stands for implantable collamer lens but is sometimes more colloquially called an implantable contact lens. It is a procedure best used for those with thin corneas, high astigmatism, or a particularly strong glasses prescription.

Currently, Dr. Swanic performs refractive surgery at the Las Vegas Eye Institute, a practice he established in 2013. He holds a strong belief in laser vision correction after having PRK performed on his own eyes. The Las Vegas Eye Institute currently specializes in LASIK and cataract surgery, though also features SMILE and other refractive surgeries as well to customize a surgical solution to the patient’s vision needs.
