Irvine, CA based Hard Drive Recovery Associates (HDRA) is making the case that external hard drives still offer a great deal of utility, and computer users should consider purchasing one in 2021. While this technology may be considered fairly old by some, the company believes it still has its uses and should not be dismissed out of hand.

In a recent blog post exploring the subject in greater detail, the company observes that, “Our daily life revolves around the multiple uses of technology. From smartphone use to the use of household appliances, we all have learned to incorporate their use in our daily lives. Back in the days, only a handful of people had personal computers or laptops of their own. There was really no need to own one since there was not much to do with it aside from encoding data and files. However, a lot has changed today that owning one simply is a must.”

Since a computer or laptop would be almost impossible to use without a hard drive or solid state drive, virtually all devices of this nature are sold with a hard drive included. However, the company acknowledges that many users may not find the included hard drives to be large enough (in other words, be able to store as much data) as they would prefer. Those who like to capture lots of video, for instance, may quickly find their hard drive space running out, especially if their videos are taken at high quality settings. As a result, purchasing an external hard drive can instantly expand their storage capabilities, allowing them to shift their larger files to another drive.

HDRA adds that users who are satisfied with their available storage space may also benefit greatly from having an external hard drive. The company asserts that it is always a good idea to backup data to help prevent it being lost in an emergency (such as computer damage, hard drive failure and so on), and external drives can be used to make backups on a regular basis.

Additionally, accident and computer breakdowns are not the only way data can be lost. Hard Drive Recovery Associates points out that many unscrupulous people may use the internet or other means to target a user’s data in order to cause harm or seek financial gain. They refer to the example of ransomware attacks, which many have fallen victim to in the past and which are troubling security experts around the world since such attacks are on the rise.

Ransomware uses certain techniques to find its way onto an unsuspecting user’s computer, at which point it begins encrypting all their personal files. Whatever is on their computer will likely then be lost since a specific encryption key is needed to retrieve these files again. The user may then be greeted with a message demanding they transfer a large amount of money to an anonymous location if they wish to receive the key to unlock their data once more.

The post says, “This is a reality an unfortunate few experience when they encounter experienced cyber criminals who will take advantage of you and your computer’s vulnerability. If you haven’t protected your data or stored a backup somewhere else, then you’re a goner. There are tons of places online, including Google Drive, where you can easily back stuff up.” HDRA adds that this type of attack is also known to hit many large businesses and corporations as well as everyday users, so taking the appropriate precautions and creating a backup are always the best actions to take.

The company concludes, “It is never wise to store all your important files in one place. So if you have the money to spare, buying an external hard drive can save you from all these headaches. You have somewhere safe to store all your important documents, photos and even songs and movies that you painstakingly downloaded from the web.”
