Pensacola, FLA. - Builders of the Yara Birkeland claim that it is the first zero-emission, autonomous cargo vessel in the world. Before the end of the year, the ship will make its first voyage between two Norwegian towns without any crew on board. According to a local Pensacola shipping store, the first zero-emission autonomous cargo ship was designed and created by a Norwegian company.
Three onshore data control centers will monitor the ship's movements. The Yara Birkeland was created by the chemical company Yara International to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions, which are toxic pollutants, greenhouse gases, and carbon dioxide while shifting freight away from roads.
The International Maritime Organization estimates that the shipping industry is responsible for 2-3% of global greenhouse gas emissions. According to Jon Sletten, plant manager for Yara's factory in Porsgrunn, Norway, the ship will carry 103 containers and reach a top speed of 13 knots, with a battery capacity of about 1,000 times as much as an electric car.
Being crewless could also lower operating costs as compared to conventional cargo ships. Although humans will initially be required to load and unload the ship, Sletten says that the technology will eventually enable all loading, discharging, and mooring operations, as well as berthing and unberthing the ship. To implement the project, Norwegian maritime authorities developed regulations for allowing the first autonomous ship to navigate Norwegian waters.
