Genesis Tree Service Fairfax, a tree service contractor based in Fairfax, VA, has announced that they have recently published a blog post about do-it-yourself (DIY) techniques for tree stump removal without destroying the yard. Aside from calling for professional stump grinding, there are various DIY ways to get rid of that unsightly stump without destroying the yard in the process. Removing a tree stump may take anywhere from just one day to two weeks, depending on how deep is the tree stump, the size of the stump, and the method that is utilized to remove it. The fastest way to eliminate a tree stump is by using a stump grinder that can be rented from an arborist equipment supply store in Fairfax or nearby areas. With a stump grinder, removing the stump may be completed in just one day.
Another way to get rid of a tree stump is to dig it out. This can take from one to several days, depending on the size of the tree stump and how much time and effort is given to the task every day. This will require a shovel or any other type of digging tool. The technique is to dig around the perimeter of the stump. While doing that, it is important to remove all of the dirt and roots from the ground. Next, an ax or chainsaw can be used too cut through the bottom of the tree stump. A splitting wedge or sledge hammer may then be used to break up the tree stump into smaller and manageable pieces.
Another technique to remove a tree stump in the yard without causing damage to other parts of the yard is by burning it. Naturally, it is advisable to check on the Fairfax county fire ordinances before proceeding with burning the tree stump. It is important to ensure that the local government allows the burning of tree stumps in that particular area. Before starting the fire, it is important to do some digging around the base of the stump in order to expose the top of tree roots. Burning the stump may take several days, especially if the stump is still wet. The dryer the stump is, the faster it will burn. After the fire has died down and ensured to be extinguished, the ashes are shoveled and the area is filled with topsoil and tamped down until it has the same level as the surrounding area.
Epsom salt may also be used to get rid of a tree stump. This will require the drilling of several holes in the top of the stump and in the roots. These holes should be at least six inches deep. The holes are then filled with Epsom salt and then water is added. It may be necessary to cover the stump with tarp, depending on the season. The procedure is repeated every three weeks, until the stump dies.
Another method makes use of fuel oil and potassium nitrate. One-inch holes are drilled around the perimeter of the stump and also 3 to 4 inches inward. More holes will have to be drilled around the stump with 45-degree angles. A mixture of potassium nitrate and fuel oil or kerosene with a ratio of two parts fuel oil to one part potassium nitrate is used. More of the mixture is to be added for four to six weeks or until the stump is spongy. An ax may then be used to break up the stump into pieces as it decomposes if necessary.
For those who don’t want the hassle of DIY stump removal, they can hire professionals to do the stump grinding. Tree service companies, such as Genesis Tree Service Fairfax, have heavy duty stump grinding machines and their experienced tree professionals can easily and quickly get rid of the stump.
