Roper Roofing & Solar, a company based in Golden, CO, has recently published a blog post to examine the question of whether temporary roofing really exists. The article explains that all roofing manufacturers strive to come up with long-lasting roofing materials. They will extend the life of the asphalt shingle beyond the default 30 years if they are able to find a way to do so. Therefore, it really doesn’t make sense that they would offer temporary roofing materials.

On the other hand, if temporary roofing materials really exist, they're primarily a novelty or a useful measurement product. For instance, cheap, temporary roofing materials would be great if a home requires a fixer-upper for a video or photoshoot. However, this is not practical for home sellers who want to impress potential homebuyers. If their buyers found out about the 2-week temporary roof lifespan, then it's a poor decision because the homebuyers will realize that they will have to spend money to replace the roofs. Alternatively, home sellers will be hiring renovators who will ask them to replace the roof with long-term roofing materials.

Temporary roofing is truly impractical. Such materials may be used as seasonal ornaments with no actual advantage for the homeowner except for aesthetic benefits. Fortunately, excellent roofing manufacturers are always focused on the clients' best interests and strive to combine aesthetics with the exceptional durability of the roofing materials.

Meanwhile, clay, metal, and slate roofing are the best when it comes to longevity and durability. With regards to clay roofing, it can be expected to last for a minimum of 50 years in the proper setting. And with developments in concrete tie technology, clay roofs are expected to last even longer. The concrete has been reformulated in several ways to create tiles that are both tougher and lighter, making them almost indestructible under the usual roofing conditions. According to the Roper Roofing & Solar blog post, it is important to note that most tile warranties cover clay roofing for 50 years and these warranties only concern the manufacturer when there is poor quality.

With regards to metal roofs, they are even more durable than the hundred-year-old homes and barns that can be found in rural areas. Getting 100 years of attractive use out of them is typically expected, and higher-quality finishes make them looking great for a longer period of time without fading and with just a little surface corrosion. There is a renewal in metal roofing and every year it has been gaining a larger piece of the market. This is not only because they are one of the quietest roofing materials, but the new metal roofing designs are elegant and they are less expensive than what many homeowners would expect.

Slate roofs have been used in Europe for hundreds of years and many of the earliest can be observed to be still in good condition. Slate is a form of stone. Thus, it is not subjected to corrosion, insects, deterioration, fire, or damage from water or the sun. It is the best when it comes to durability and it also offers great looks for most luxurious homes and buildings. In general, slate roofing can be expected to outlast most of the structures that it adorns and it is regarded as the best roofing material.

The article points out that temporary roofing materials are not recommended even if they exist. Homeowners would find it more advantageous to use really durable roofing materials, such as clay/concrete roofing, metal roofing, or slate roofing.
