US based Senior Care Center1 would like to comment on the Home Improvements and Structural Alterations (HISA) Grant which provides coverage for medically necessary improvements and alterations to the homes of veterans and active service members. Those eligible to receive the grant can get up to $6,899 if they have a service related condition, or $2,000 if they have a non-service related condition.

The HISA Grant provides veterans and their families with the much needed resources to make modifications to their homes in order to increase access and mobility. The funds are completely tax free, which makes it so veterans can request whatever sum is needed to make the necessary changes to their home without having to worry how much it will cost them in taxes later on. Veterans have lifetime access to the grant and can apply multiple times, but only until they have made use of the maximum amount. Unlike other grants, the HISA Grant application process is relatively simple, and eligibility is simply based on the improvements the applicant requires and their medical list. There is no list of qualifying medical conditions or injuries, and one need only present a prescription explaining their condition and their reasons for needing a home modification.

The grant covers a wide range of additions and modifications to the home as long as they are medically necessary for the veteran. Some of the alterations the grant covers include the addition of interior or exterior lights, updates to plumbing and electricity to support life-sustaining equipment, the installation of a permanent wheelchair ramp and much more.

Seniors are one group of people that stand to get the most out of the HISA Grant. As veterans age, a number of conditions begin to surface, including underlying issues caused by their service. As a result, having funds available to make a few changes around the house can make a world of difference. There are millions of veterans above the age of 65 in the United States today, and that number continues to grow. They have all served their country in a number of conflicts, and there are a number of grants and funds available to try and make their lives a little bit easier, especially since many of them sustained injuries during the many conflicts they were involved in.

“Many, many people who serve in the military become injured in ways that result in long term disabilities,” says an article by Senior Care Center1. “Fortunately, the VA offers Disability Compensation, a tax-free benefit paid to veterans who develop disabilities during active service as a result of either injury or disease. This does, in fact, include injuries that do not manifest until after your time of service. The most important requirement is that you qualify as ‘at least 10% disabled.’ A medical examination will be used to rate your disability on a scale of 10 to 100, in increments of 10%. So, you don’t need to be very severely disabled to qualify, but it does need to be something that affects your everyday life.”

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has more information on the HISA grant and many of the other financial resources that are available to veterans. The Department of Veterans Affairs is committed to providing veterans with a number of services and benefits in order to insure they can face old age without having to fear the cost. VA benefits include disability compensation, vocational rehabilitation and employment, burial and so on.

Veterans are also eligible to receive the veterans’ pension. The veterans’ pension provides monthly payments to wartime veterans who meet the relevant age, income, net worth and disability requirements. Veterans who did not receive a dishonorable discharge and whose family income and net worth are within the limits set by congress are free to apply for veterans’ pension.

There is a great deal of support for veterans, particularly elderly veterans. One need only apply to begin enjoying the benefits afforded to those who, at some point, chose to serve their country.
