"The sale of Charlottesville luxury homes in golfing communities appears to be leading the way in 2021 and it's getting hotter and hotter," says Toby Beavers, a savvy Charlottesville luxury homes realtor. "There are five wonderful golf communities that offer Charlottesville luxury homes. Going from the east of Albemarle County to the west we have The Club at Glenmore, Keswick Estates, Farmington Country Club, Ednam, and Old Trail. The Club at Glenmore and Old Trail are the two largest communities and the only ones actively building new Charlottesville luxury homes. The other three have more or less run out of buildable land," says Beavers.

"If I was searching for a Charlottesville luxury home in a golf community I'd have to consider a few things if I had young children. First, the location. Do I want to live on the east side of Charlottesville or the west side? Secondly, public or private schooling, and finally, how far a drive it would be twice a day for five days a week (as all Charlottesville parents will quickly learn, public school buses are for losers)," Beavers laughs.

Charlottesville Luxury Homes

The Club at Glenmore is located east of Charlottesville in Keswick in a fabulous gated community that offers just about any sport a family could want including a championship 18-hole golf course and horseback riding. The Club at Glenmore consists of luxurious single-family homes, quaint cottages, and expansive estates priced from $500-$2.5m.

Keswick Estate is also located in Keswick on the exquisite grounds of Charlottesville's Five Star - Keswick Resort (once owned by Laura Ashley) and is much smaller and way-more subdued. The highlight during the day is the challenging 18-hole Full Cry golf course redesigned by Pete Dye. At night it's all about the sumptuous dining in Keswick Hall. The average Keswick Estate home sold for just over $1,180,000.

Farmington Country Club is located west of the city of Charlottesville and is the oldest golfing community dating back to 1929 and offers many of the finest Charlottesville luxury homes in Central Virginia. The clubhouse dates back to 1735 and was designed by Thomas Jefferson (there's a fabulous public room that reflects the vision of its great builder and is known as the Jefferson Room). The club offers a fun and challenging 28-hole golf course. Farmington is not gated but has its own security.

Ednam is another older community located across the street from Farmington Country Club. It adjoins the newly-renovated, 4 Star Mobil Boars Head Inn and Bridwood Golf Course making it a delightful place to live and play. Ednam is not gated and offers condos, townhouses, and luxury single-family homes.

Old Trail is the newest Charlottesville luxury homes community and is located 20 mins west of Charlottesville in Crozet. Building began in 2004 and continues today. Just outside of Old Trail are the highly-esteemed Western Albemarle County Public Schools. Old Trail offers spectacular Blue Ridge Mountain views, a lovely newer 18-hole golf course, and an Olympic-size swimming pool. Designed as a destination, Old Trail offers restaurants, doctor's offices, coffee shops, and an ACAC gym. It is not a gated community but bike and walking-friendly.

"So let's revisit the five golf communities that sell Charlottesville luxury homes and I'll make my recommendations," Beavers adds.

"1 If you desire to live on the east side of Charlottesville and you have a young family then consider purchasing a new luxury home in The Club at Glenmore.

"2 If you love southern charm and Virginia history and like it tranquil and quiet, then look in Keswick Estate. I don't believe young children will love it as much as The Club at Glenmore. There are many more children living in The Club at Glenmore. I'll climb out on a limb and say Keswick Estate is for older people.

"3 If money is not a problem then living in the Farmington Country Club is for you. Just drive up to the circle and you'll see why. The immaculate, historic clubhouse, the spectacular Blue Ridge Mountain views, and the mature, park-like grounds are marvelous. This is five-star living!

"4 Ednam is perfectly located minutes from UVA and is not a private club (like Farmington is). The Boars Head Club is owned by UVA and their athletes come here for golf and squash. Anyone can join. So if country club living is not for you then Ednam is. Take your pick of a condo, townhouse, or luxury single-family home.

"5 If great public schools and community-living appeal to you then head over to Old Trail where the Charlottesville luxury homes are newer, more affordable, and kid-friendly thanks to the schools being here.

"I hope this helps anyone looking to buy a Charlottesville luxury home in a golf community," adds Beavers.
