Dr. Amauri Wellness Centre, a naturopathic clinic in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, has recently released a blog post that describes their protocols and policies for Lyme disease treatment. The therapies provided for Lyme disease are designed to help strengthen the immune system, promote detoxification, and the natural treatment of Lyme disease and its symptoms. They utilise integrative functional medicine approaches for the therapies they provide, such as herbal remedies, adjustments to the daily diet, intravenous (IV) therapy and standard lyme care. Dr. Amauri Caversan, ND, and Arv Buttar, NP, provide an integrative Lyme disease program in Toronto and neighbouring areas.

Dr. Amauri Caversan, ND, says, “Depending on the patient’s needs, we may recommend only herbal treatments or in combination with other treatments, including antibiotics. For patients who are not able to tolerate antibiotics, we will recommend natural treatments, such as nutraceuticals, herbal treatments, and IV therapy.”

They may suggest Lyme disease herbal treatments, nutraceuticals, and IV therapy for a number of reasons. These reasons are: to offer support in improving antimicrobial efficacy; to help rebuild neurological tissues; to naturally help promote anti yeast properties; to help support cognitive function, particularly memory; to contribute to enhancing cellular (mitochondrial) function; to aid with improving energy levels; and to help manage Jarisch-Herxheimer reactions.

It is important to note that every patient may have a different response to various treatments. But in general, it has been observed that chronic Lyme disease may not develop as long as the patient has taken antibiotics 30 days after being bitten by an infected tick. Antibiotics need to be taken in a span of three to four weeks, after which the symptoms of Lyme disease may be in remission.

The health care practitioners at Dr. Amauri Wellness Centre may prescribe antibiotics but this will only be done if the patient agrees to certain adjustments to daily diet. Before a patient starts with antibiotics, he or she has to avoid sugar, yeast, and alcohol for at least 14 days. The integrative functional medicine care clinic in Toronto may also provide requisition forms for EKGs, blood analysis, and other diagnostic tests. They will not provide physical paper copies of prescriptions . All of the prescription forms will be sent to the pharmacy of the patient through fax. They also want to emphasise that they will not provide prescriptions for pain, anxiety, and sleep medications.

For those who are already consulting with a Lyme Literate Naturopathic Doctor, Lyme Literate Nurse Practitioner or Lyme Literate Medical Doctor, the team at Dr. Amauri Wellness Centre can work with these health practitioners with regards to the treatments. For patients whose health care provider is in another country, their health practitioner must send the team at Dr. Amauri Wellness Centre a referral letter or note summary before Dr. Amauri Caversan, ND, and Arv Buttar, NP, start implementing their treatment guidelines.

Dr. Amauri Wellness Centre also offers testing for Lyme and co-infections. They order such tests from IGeneX and ArminLabs because both are focused on tick-borne illnesses.

They want to emphasise that naturopathic medicine utilises physiologically supportive and non invasive techniques whenever possible and has the ultimate goal of preventing disease. This goal is accomplished by educating people and promoting lifestyle habits that result in ideal health. Naturopathy is a form of health care that integrates modern scientific knowledge into traditional and natural forms of medicine. It is based on the philosophy that a person’s total lifestyle is a primary factor in health and well-being.
