The initiative created by the American Dental Association (ADA) brings together thousands of dedicated professionals, healthcare providers, and educators to promote the benefits of good oral health to children, their caregivers, teachers, and many others. Program coordinators all around the country will be promoting the benefits of good oral health to children for the entire month. They aim to achieve this through easy-to-do activities, proclamations, and press releases that spread knowledge and awareness about good dental health. The ADA is providing resources to its coordinators to help along with planning, timelines, and ideas to achieve its goals.

National Children’s Dental Health observances began with a one-day event in Cleveland, Ohio, and a one-week event in Akron, Ohio during February 1941. Since then, the concept has grown from a two-city event into a nationwide program. The American Dental Association held the first national observance of Children’s Dental Health Day on February 8, 1949. The single-day observance became a weeklong event in 1955. In 1981, the program was extended to a month-long celebration known today as National Children’s Dental Health Month.

NCDHM messages reach millions of people in communities across the country and at numerous armed service bases. Local observances often include poster, coloring, and essay contests, health fairs, free dental screenings, museum exhibits, classroom presentations, and dental office tours. It is the program’s core belief that attitudes and habits established at an early age are critical in maintaining good oral health throughout life. Members of the dental team, parents, and teachers can help keep children’s smiles beautiful now and for years to come by participating in the annual celebration of National Children’s Dental Health Month.

The planning for the event starts in the October of the previous year. Early on, there is a call to invite educators, health professionals, and religious, and political leaders to be a part of the conversation. The goal is to identify the main issues faced by the community when it comes to oral health. These can be problems with access to care, early childhood cavities, sealant education, tooth decay, tobacco use, sports injuries, junk food, school vending machines, methamphetamine use, and others. Then the onus is on the team to craft a plan that solves the identified problems. There is a need to highlight whether the measures required are the spread of information, preventive treatment, or restorative treatment. Then campaign goals are defined with the election of a spokesperson. Budgets are determined, subcommittees are appointed, and activities are selected for February. Members of the community also start reaching out to possible co-sponsors such as schools, hospitals, libraries, and others.

In November, the committee members will order free NCDHM posters, send confirmation letters to participating organizations, contact the local mayor’s office about signing a proclamation launching NCDHM in February. The members also develop a list of media contacts and prepare press releases about dental health issues and local events. There is also a follow up for arrangements for displays, health fairs, and school presentations. In December, they distribute press releases about dental health issues, special events, and activities. In January, they make final confirmations with speakers, facilities, and distribute the posters to schools, clinics, libraries, and other places of interest. In February, they send out follow up press releases with phone calls inviting local newspaper, radio, and TV reporters to cover the dental health events. Finally, in March, the members will distribute thank-you letters and certificates of appreciation and prepare a summary report of activities, expenses, and other meaningful data for future campaigns.
