Acacia Dental Group, a privately-owned dental family practice in Woden, Canberra, is educating its customers about the benefits of CEREC technology. It is a revolutionary new cosmetic dentistry procedure that offers a quick and hassle-free solution for protecting and restoring damaged teeth.

The clinic says that in the days before cosmetic dentistry technology like CEREC, patients would need to wait for weeks to have their dental crowns placed. The process involved two separate appointments. In the first appointment, the dentist would shape the tooth down and take an impression, which would then be sent to a lab for the dental crown to be created. The patient would then be fitted for a temporary dental crown while they waited, possibly for weeks, until their second visit, where the temporary crown would be removed and the final dental crown would be bonded to the remnants of the natural tooth. Thanks to CEREC, the dental crown can be placed in only one appointment. It eliminates the need for waiting around with a temporary, more fragile crown or coming in for more than one visit.

To answer the question, “What is CEREC Dentistry”, the clinic explains the use of the CEREC dental crown machine. Using the machine, cosmetic dentists can create 3D digital images of a patient’s tooth. The doctors can then design the ceramic restoration, which will be highly accurate. Instead of waiting a week for the material to come to and from a laboratory, the durable and natural-looking crown is created inside the dental practice itself.

The clinic says that in a typical CEREC appointment, the dental team will first of all prep the tooth and a digital 3D scan will be taken of the entire area. This image can be viewed on-screen by the dentist, as well as the patient, which enables them to explain the treatment in greater detail and with visual assistance. Using the 3D scan, the crown is designed in-practice. This technology allows for quick, efficient, and durable restorations. The custom-made restoration will then be polished and fitted into place. The process generally only takes about an hour and it all takes place in one appointment.

CEREC dental crowns look and feel almost indistinguishable from a natural tooth. It has the significant advantage of biocompatibility. It preserves the remaining tooth and prevents breakage. The crowns are durable and resistant to stains. Restorations can last between five and fifteen years. Most dentists will expect them to last about ten years, but the patient’s level of care and hygiene can affect their lifespan.

A properly fitted crown or bridge will assist the patient in activities like speaking and eating. Missing teeth can impede the ability to speak normally, and some patients avoid certain types of food because of missing or damaged teeth. The restoration will function as a normal, healthy tooth, improving the patient’s ability to perform everyday activities like chewing food.

The clinic recommends proper dental hygiene for keeping the restorations strong and healthy. Bridges, in particular, depend on the health of surrounding teeth to continue functioning. The clinic strongly recommends brushing and flossing regularly to prevent gum disease and/or tooth decay. A regular cleaning schedule will also help maintain the crowns or bridges. The clinic recommends a check-up every six months.
