Hard Drive Recovery Group, based in Irvine, California, has published a new blog post titled ‘What A Waste – Our World’s Problem With Electronic Waste.’ The company specializes in data recovery services and has established a reputation that spans the past 15 years.

According to the post, “We are living in a materialistic world. We consume so much tech, so it’s only natural for companies to produce much as well to keep up with the demand. Thus, it is no wonder that laptops, air conditioners, television sets, headphones, microwaves, smartphones and other electronic gadgets have ended up as electronic waste, which the world has also been producing at astounding levels.”

This has been emphasized in the results of a 2019 report, which states that humanity has generated record numbers of e-waste — and as with its non-electronic counterparts, increased waste material always presents a new challenge. According to the Global E-Waste Monitor, a United Nations University, International Telecommunication Union and International Solid Waste Association effort, 2019 yielded 53.6 million metric tons of e-waste, an amount which is significantly higher in comparison to the levels recorded in the first report of 2014 levels. The difference of 9.2 million metric tons is made even more troubling when only 17% of the total has been recycled to date. To quote the post, “Things have gotten better, but still not good enough”.

In reality, the situation has improved to an extent, partly thanks to the world’s increased efforts in recycling. This is compared to the rate of recycling during the 1990s and early 200s, where people were at a loss on what to do with their old electronics. However, the post states, “But then, there is also an increase in the consumption of electronics, so recycling efforts have to keep up.”

According to the statement made by Richard Kirkman, Chief Technology and Innovation Officer at Veolia, “Once e-equipment becomes waste, it is hazardous. If you just dumped it in the environment, it would cause a problem.” Kirkman has spent the past 20 years working in the waste sector and has gained specialized knowledge, through experience, about seemingly every recycling process in existence. He observes that, when he started, everything was headed to the landfill. Today, the outlook is much better.

The post brings up the question, “What actually happens to e-waste?” It goes on to explain that, “E-waste is a huge issue because electronics contain harmful chemicals, that when thrown into the landfill and left to rot, may seep into the ground and deeper into water sources that obviously will poison us all.” A critical problem is the toxic additives which also leak into the soil. An approximate amount of 50 tons of mercury is contained in undocumented flows of e-waste, annually. Mercury is a high-risk substance as it can damage the human brain and coordination system in large doses, and often causes soil pollution in areas around landfills.

According to Hard Drive Recovery Group, there are certain actions that one can take to prevent excessive pollution. As consumers of electronics, the company recommends that the general public must be more conscious of throwing broken gadgets. A fairly significant percentage of these items can be recycled, so the community needs to look into ways of disposing of obsolete gadgets responsibly. The best way to ensure that old electronics are not contributing to the e-waste problem is to ensure that they are properly recycled, a task which is, according to the post, “easier said than done.” One cannot throw away an old computer in the recycling bin and be done with it. The post provides information regarding proper disposal as well.

If one’s soft copies of documents go missing and cannot be located even in a device’s Recycle Bin, this might be a problem. At Hard Drive Recovery Group, this is not a problem that the company cannot solve. The company understands the importance of a client’s data. Over a period of 15 years, the company has recovered thousands of gigabytes of data. According to the company website, “Our clients come to us with intentional deletions, fire and flood data loss and many other accidental losses that the client thought would be unrecoverable — only to prove that data, in the hands of data recovery experts like HDRG, is never ‘unrecoverable.’ This is one of the many reasons why HDRG has a 99% customer retention rate and receives over 80% of our customer referrals from current clients.”

The company also provides user friendly software which would enable the recovery of data from logical crashes or data deletion. Due to the risk of causing permanent data loss, however, the company recommends contacting their experts when in need of data recovery services.
