Houston, TX: SUN Behavioral Houston has added to its online inventory of resources in its latest article “What Does An Anxiety Attack Feel Like?”
The article highlights the difference between uncommon, specific situation-related symptoms experienced as an anxiety attack and those that are reoccurring and may indicate an anxiety disorder. Fear is natural but should not be debilitating, it emphasizes.
Some general indicators of an anxiety disorder lasting more than six months include:
-Depressed mood, hopelessness
-Self-harm or thoughts of self-harm
-Difficulty with daily functioning
-Insomnia or excessive sleepiness
-Mood swings
-Anxiety, persistent worry, panic attacks
-Hyperactivity
-Difficulty regulating impulses and risk-taking behavior
-Isolation and social fears
Someone with an anxiety disorder sees threats where there are none or perceive something as more dangerous than it is. It impedes their ability to function and enjoy a full quality of life, but anxiety can be treated with therapy skills.
Of the 40 million American adults who have an anxiety disorder, nearly 60% do not receive treatment. That number is slightly higher in Texas with 62% of adults with a mental illness not receiving treatment, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s Behavioral Health Barometer report.
The programs at SUN Behavioral use evidence-based practices. These are proven to be the most effective in treating mood and anxiety disorders. Our programs include a combination of psychopharmacology with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and other strength-based interventions. The team at SUN Behavioral Houston works with patients to help determine if medication treatment is right for them and will help manage symptoms.
