The upcoming holiday season is fast approaching, and it is time for Rusty Angler’s annual website recommendations full of information on gift ideas for fishermen.

“Rusty Angler regularly publishes fishing gear recommendations,” said Russell Conner, owner of the Rusty Angler, a website that offers fishing tips and techniques. “Our site has information on rods, lures, tackle boxes, bait, knives, and more—making the site an excellent resource for gift ideas for fishermen.”

For children who are new to the joy of fishing, Conner recommends the article on Kids Fishing Equipment Recommendations. “As mentioned in the article, fishing gear for children should be sturdy enough to take the abuse of beginners but sensitive enough to make the catch,” said Conner. “Fishing gear for kids should also be sized correctly and appropriate for the type of fishing they will be doing.”

Some of the top choices for younger children include Plano’s Take Me Fishing Tackle Box, the Kid Caster Tangle Free combo sets, and the Zebco 33MC502UL set. For older children, the Shakespeare Ugly Stick Dock Runner combo is a good choice. When it comes to reels, the Rusty Angler recommends the Daiwa BG Spinning Reel, the Abu Garcia 170 Spincast, and the Shimano Stradic K Spinning Reel.

“Adult fishermen looking for modern gear that is technologically advanced should check out the article Fishing Gear for Modern Anglers,” said Conner. “That article includes information on some of the latest fishing rods, lures, and lines.”

Some of the rods highlighted in the article include the St. Croix Mojo Yak (designed specifically for fishing from kayaks), the St. Croix Mojo Bass glass rods (ideal for bass fishing), the Tsunami SaltX (for a takedown rod), the Berkley Glowstik (for nighttime anglers), and the Shakespeare Ugly Stik GX2 (for bass fishing).

Fishermen looking for great lures, Rusty Angler recommends the LIVETARGET Freestyle Frog (mimics a swimming frog), BBZ-1 swimbait (mimics baitfish), and the Z-Man Project Z Weedless Chatterbait Jig (prevents snagging and fouling around wood, brush, docks, grass, and laydowns).

One item that many fishermen may have on their holiday wish list is a fish finder. “The article on Humminbird Fish Finders is popular because it highlights some of the fish finding innovations by Humminbird,” said Conner. “Humminbird changed the face of fishing in 1975 with the introduction of the world’s first waterproof depth sounder. Since then, the company has led the market with innovations and quality products.”

Although top-of-the-line fish finders—such as the Humminbird SOLIX series—can cost thousands of dollars, the company also makes less expensive and highly regarded fish finders. The Humminbird PiranhaMAX starts under $100 and is an ideal finder for those starting out or those who need a portable fish finder. Slightly more expensive but still under $500 is the Humminbird Helix series, including the Helix 5 CHIRP Sonar/GPS G2 Combo.

For more gear recommendations and gift ideas, the Rusty Angler is full of ideas for bait, tackle boxes, lures, rods, and reels. The site also provides information on fishing for bass, catfish, pike, panfish, trout, walleye, and inshore saltwater fish.
