The Barber Law Firm, based in Dallas, Texas, is raising awareness of the need for volunteers to help their local comunities make it through the current crisis. Given the unprecedented circumstances people are facing across the state and country, the firm published an article on its blog featuring striking images from recent food drives to make a point that this is the best time for volunteers to lend their aid to relief efforts.

The Dallas community article, titled ‘North Texas Food Bank Events Show that if You’ve Ever Thought About Volunteering, This is the Time,’ that was recently published on the firm's blog.

According to the post, the record levels of unemployment seen around the state have the side effect of giving many more people the opportunity to pursue other interests or to use their time in alternative ways. While some will undoubtedly be looking for ways to earn another source of income in order to support themselves and their families, certain groups may find that this situation presents them with the ability to begin volunteering, especially if this pursuit is one they had been putting off for some time.

The post showed a collection of images taken from various sources depicting hundreds of cars lining up at recent North Texas Food Bank’s (NTFB) expansive events, which were held close to their Plano office. The post says that, “The non-profit food distribution organization in Plano has held 4 of these ‘mega distribution’ events since the start of the year with, “7,140 households served, 657,411 pounds of food given out, 547,843 meals provided and over 30,000 individuals helped,” according to a recent statement by the organization.”

All four of these events were largely made possible due to the efforts of volunteers who had identified the immense pressure their local communities were under. The economic crisis that followed the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic forced many Dallas small businesses to close their doors contibuting to the unemployment situation and sudden loss of income faced by thousands of families in the area. Although lower than the peak of 13% in April, the Dallas region still suffers from a 9% unemployment rate according to statistics shown on ycharts.com.

The corresponding response to the North Texas Food Bank distribution events has rissen significantly. An NTFB spokesperson noted that mobile food distributions are dispensing nearly 300% more pounds of food compared to the same period last year. Further, the NTFB website states that 40% of the people served during the pandemic period this year have been new clients or those whom have never benefited from NTFB distributions in the past. The increase in need has overwhelmed the mega distribution evens with locals getting boxes of food as well as making use of the assistance that NTFB offers to help families and individuals sign up for SNAP benefits. The post explains, “Fair Park First and Spectra helped the North Texas Food Bank organization by working with Dallas Police to create lanes to keep cars off the street for over a mile long line. Arrangements were also made for those without a car to receive food boxes by walk up.”

Perhaps cognizant of the fact that the families who arrived would like some variety as well as nourishment, the organizations involved made sure the boxes (which were supplied by Farmers to Families) had an assortment of items. The post shares that Dr. Hawthorne, one of the event’s organizers, explained there were several types of boxes that each had a specific type of food. For instance, volunteers handed out a dry box that contained canned fruit and vegetables, beans, pasta, rice and so on; a produce box with apples, peaches, plums, veg and more; and even a dairy box that offered cheese, butter, half and half and cottage cheese.

“The North Texas Food Bank also operates mobile pantry distributions throughout 13 North Texas counties,” says the post. “Right now, the North Texas Food Bank is calling for volunteers to help with some of these mobile pantries.” Dallas, an area that has suffered greatly since the pandemic began, has uncountable households that need such organizations to survive the next few months. While the state (and the US as a whole) waits for a more permanent solution to the crisis, those who volunteer their time in this manner will have a huge, positive impact on hundreds if not thousands of individuals and families.
