With regards to orthopedic stem cell treatment, Dr. Dryer says, “The emerging field of stem cell therapy promises to change the face of medicine, and orthopedics is no exception. While many of these treatments remain largely experimental and cost-prohibitive, there are some methods that have become publicly available in recent years. The procedures are typically highly effective, with some patients experiencing noticeable results within days. Injured tissues including cartilage, tendons, ligaments, and even bone can be restored with stem cell therapy, commonly through the use of targeted injections.” Those who want to know more about the practice may want to follow their Facebook page.

In orthopedic stem cell treatment, the orthopedic surgeon will extract bone marrow cells from a patient. This contains stem cells and the stem cells are separated by using a centrifuge. These stem cells are then injected back into the patient in that part of the body where treatment is required. These stem cells, for example, can form cartilage tissue in a joint where this tissue has been depleted. Theoretically, cells for bones, ligaments, and tendons can be generated and used to repair tissues that have been damaged.

Dr. Dryer can also provide endoscopic discectomy, which is a minimally invasive spine surgery for treating herniated discs. This is a common spine disorder that causes a range of symptoms, ranging from slight discomfort to intense pain, and limited mobility. The procedure is only slightly intrusive, using only a small incision in the back to gain access to the herniated disc. The surgeon uses an endoscope to view the part of the disc that is compressing the nerve root so that this may be removed using surgical tools.

Meanwhile, Dr. Dryer uses lumbar fusion to treat degenerative disc disease, which causes a lot of pain as a result of pinched nerves. This is because as the discs break down, the space between the vertebrae is reduced, causing the nerve root to become compressed. Lumbar fusion has the goal of restoring that space. The orthopedic surgeon removes a portion of the damaged disc and then puts two temporary spacers to realign the spine and remove the pressure on the nerve root. These spaces are then carefully replaced with two metal cages, which are packed with morselized bone graft. The bone graft grows through the holes in the cage thereby fusing with the bone in both vertebrae to create a bridge made of solid bone.

Meanwhile, epidural steroid injections may be used to relieve back pain. This is a non-surgical process that only requires a few minutes to complete. In this procedure, a local anesthetic steroid medication is delivered to the inflamed nerve roots located in the lower spine.
