St. Louis, Missouri -

Dr. Jason Brinton of Brinton Vision was recently featured on the Visian ICL website in an article that explores Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL) as an alternative to Lasik. The article describes some of the reasons why one might choose ICL surgery over Lasik, as well as some of the benefits and tradeoffs associated with both options.

Around the world, many are turning away from glasses and contact lenses and opting for permanent vision correction procedures instead. Advancements in science and technology provide a wide range of options for those seeking clearer vision, including Lasik and ICL. “Over the past year, we have noticed that more and more of our younger patients up to age 45 are choosing Visian ICL,” says the article. “One would be hard-pressed to find an elective surgical procedure with a better track record than the Visian ICL surgery. For the past two decades, studies have repeatedly demonstrated that ICL safety meets or exceeds the safety of other popular vision correction surgery procedures such as LASIK or PRK. Some studies have shown that Visian ICL, SMILE and LASIK all have excellent efficacy, safety, stability, and accuracy (J Refract Surg 2019 Nov 1;35(11):699-706. doi: 10.3928/1081597X-20190930-01) while other studies have demonstrated that in the most important respects, Visian ICL’s safety and efficacy exceeds that of LASIK, PRK and SMILE.”

ICL is different from Lasik in that it corrects the eye by placing a corrective lens in a specific chamber within the eye as opposed to reshaping the cornea the way LASIK does. LASIK involves using a laser to create a precise flap of tissue in the cornea and then pulling back the flap to expose the inner corneal tissue. Some of this tissue is removed using a laser to reshape the cornea. This reshaping then allows light to bend in such a way as to focus, in a more optimal place within the eye, producing better vision. With Visian ICL surgery, on the other hand, a lens containing collagen is placed in the eye to bend and focus light properly.

“The surgeon makes a tiny incision in the cornea, then places the ICL behind the iris,” says the article by Visian ICL. “The lens works with the eye’s natural lens to correct refractive errors. The procedure is intended to let the natural lens stay intact (unlike with refractive lens exchange) and allow the self-sealing incision to heal quickly on its own. Most patients say that the 15 minute procedure is painless, and vision improvement is rapid. Many patients awaken the next day with clear eyesight for the first time in as long as they can remember.”

Dr. Jason Brinton believes that it is important to always have multiple treatment options available to suit different patients, individual eyes, and visual needs. He is an internationally recognized Lasik and vision correction surgeon in St. Louis who received a BA from Harvard University, an MD from Harvard Medical School and is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He started Brinton Vision in 2017 in St. Louis, Missouri, a state of the art lens implant and laser eye correction surgery center that, in recent years, has been the top provider of Visian ICL procedures in the United States.

Dr. Jason Brinton has even performed a number of Visian ICL procedures for other eye doctors, including Lasik eye surgeons. “Many Lasik centers in St. Louis pour their training, investments and advertising into Lasik but don’t offer Lasik eye surgery alternatives,” say’s Brinton. “After all, Lasik surgery holds a well-deserved spot as one of the most successful elective procedures in medical history. However, just as every person is unique, so are their eyes. While there is no one-size-fits-all solution for vision correction surgery, for many patients, Visian ICL is the best option. Your Brinton Vision Ocular Analysis will provide the information needed to develop a customized, personalized plan to help you obtain visual freedom.”
