This is because discs that are breaking down have little separation between the vertebrae in the spine with the result that the nerve roots located in that space are compressed, resulting into pain with varying intensity. Lumbar fusion has the goal of restoring that space by removing the damaged disc and placing two temporary spacers to realign the spine and relieve the pressure being exerted on the nerve root. These spacers will then be replaced by two metal cages that contain morselized bone graft.
