Beverly Hills, CA - In the hot summer sun, many surfaces to which a dog’s paws might be exposed to can become very, very hot, such as pavement, asphalt and beach sand. Even after the sun goes down, these surfaces can retain their heat for a long time, especially when it’s been a hot day. Temperatures on these surfaces have been measured at a scorching 145 degrees Fahrenheit.
Dog owners should be aware that these surfaces are a potential danger to their dogs. Canines run a real risk of serious burns to their paws if they are exposed to these surfaces for any length of time.
Here’s how owners can protect a dog from burns to his paws due to a hot surface: If at all possible avoid walking dogs during the hottest part of the day. Walk early in the morning before pavement has had a chance to heat up or walk late in the evening after it’s cooled down.
