Birmingham, Ala. – Over the course of 2020, several lawmakers have suggested various legislations for consideration regarding bail bond legislation and bail bond reform. Although various solutions and changes have been suggested, very few were passed, which make bail bond fluctuations few and far between. Jefferson County bail bonds agents are closely following the passing of Aniah’s Law, which was first put into motion early this year.
Aniah’s Law is named after an Alabama college student, Aniah Blanchard, who suffered a violent death caused by an inmate who was at the time released on bail. This new bill would allow prosecutors to be able to challenge an inmate’s right to be eligible for bail. Additionally, under this law, a judge would be able to deny bail to those who have been convicted of crimes that previously were not bail-deny eligible. As Aniah’s Law has since been passed by the House, it will soon be moved to the Senate for final approval.
Currently, once bail has been set by a judge, a bail bondsman will pay a fee for the suspect to be released. Depending on how quickly new laws or regulations are put into motion, a bail bondsman in Birmingham, as well as residents of Alabama, could be seeing the results of new bail reforms as soon as the 2020 third fiscal quarter.
