Pinnacle Treatment Centers has just posted a new blog on its website that’s titled 'What is Drug Addiction'. They decided to post this article to help people better understand what causes drug addiction and some of the interventions used to help people recover from drug dependency. Those at their treatment centers feel this information is invaluable to those who are trying to cope with drug addiction and for their loved ones who are looking for a way to help.

Pinnacle Treatment Centers spokesperson, Melanie Eilers, had these comments on the new blog post, “One of the most important words as far as drug addiction goes is the word ‘understand’. It’s important for those that are experiencing drug dependency to ‘understand’ what the root causes of their addiction might be before they can attempt to resolve it. Family and friends must also better ‘understand’ what leads to drug addiction and what it’s like for the person going through it. Once loved ones ‘understand’ more about what causes addiction and the sense of hopelessness that goes with it, it then helps them become less judgmental and more supportive. That’s why this blog article was written and posted. As the title suggests, it’s all about understanding ‘What is Drug Addiction’.”

What Is Drug Addiction

The blog post started by saying that drug addiction is a disease that negatively impacts a person’s brain and behavior. Drug addiction often starts with a social experiment that turns into a habit. It gradually starts developing and gets worse when the individual continues to consume a drug despite the impairment that it causes. The article stated that unfortunately, it becomes a lifestyle that often leads to a series of mental, physical and social impairments. This was followed up with some very telling statistics such as some estimated 17.9 million people dealt with some form of substance abuse in 2017 and that drug addiction was thought to contribute to some $740 billion in annual losses in the USA. The article also pointed out that there are several common symptoms associated with drug addiction. These include having the urge to consume the drug frequently, having to increase the quantity of the drug to get the same effect, spending more money on the drug even when one can’t afford it, and neglecting one’s own responsibilities such as work and family.

According to the Pinnacle Treatment Centers blog post, several factors can lead to drug addiction. Some are genetic and others are environmental. Environmental factors include peer pressure, one’s family’s attitudes and beliefs, lack of family support, and life incidents one witnesses as a child. Genetic risk factors listed in the blog post included a family history of any addiction and the fact that some drugs are highly-addictive by nature. It even mentioned that genetic makeup also impacts the rate of progress in which a drug addiction builds. The article went on to add that some of the root causes of drug addiction give the victim no control over themselves due to the complexity of those root causes.

Lastly, the article went over several different interventions that many drug addicts have successfully undergone. This includes such treatments as detoxification and withdrawal, chemical dependency treatment programs, behavior therapy with a skilled psychologist, psychiatrist, or a licensed alcohol/drug counselor, and participating in self-help groups. The blog post mentioned that there is no one-size-fits-all treatment path when it comes to drug addiction. It also encouraged people not to give up hope because with the help of heart to heart conversations and evidence-based treatment plans under specialist supervision, there is a high chance of an addict overcoming their addiction and claiming their life back.

According to Eilers, Pinnacle Treatment Centers cater to those addicts that suffer from alcohol use disorder, drug addiction, opioid addiction, and co-occurring disorders. She says their services focus on diagnosis, planning, and treatment and they can be done on an inpatient, extensive outpatient or a general outpatient basis. Eilers encourages those looking for drug addiction help to check out their informational website.
