Burlingame, Ca. – The Governor of California, Gavin Newsom, announced to direct all in the State of California to remain at home during the COVID-19 outbreak. Shortly after this declaration, Contra Costa County in California announced its first death attributed to the virus. This person was in their 70’s and had traveled recently overseas, as well as had a medical condition. The patient passed on March 19, 2020. Alpine Awards, an awards store in Burlingame, CA is directed affected by this virus as well from businesses being shut down.

Riverside County in California reported on March 20, 2020, the fourth death due to the COVID-19 virus, which was the 21st in the state. The number of cases is continually rising throughout the state. The Department of Corrections in California confirmed March 20, 2020, that an employee at the California State Prison and an employee at San Quentin State Prison both were confirmed positive for COVID-19, but there are no confirmed positives from any inmates.

All of the prisoners at San Quentin have been placed on lockdown due to some of the inmates displaying flu-like symptoms. The Department has not yet released the results of the tests from those inmates. A veteran as well has tested positive at the West Los Angeles Veterans Affairs Medical Center on March 18, 2020. This person was admitted and is being cared for in an isolation unit to reduce the risk of transmitting the virus to other patients and staff. The VA is holding screenings for those who potentially are at risk.

San Diego County had another group of positive COVID-19 patients on March 19, 2020, which caused the local case number to jump from 80 to 105. With these cases rising, Newsom ordered all occupants of California to remain home as a mandatory request for all 40 million residents.
