Centerville, Utah based Utah Disaster Specialists has commented on an unfortunate sewage situation that has arisen in Lehi, Utah, where they were called in to perform a cleanup operation. The company is a leading expert in Northern Utah and can deal with the aftermath of large scale issues such as disasters.

The situation involves a rented home which houses the tenants’ business, a daycare center. Sewage backed up, flooding half of the home’s basement. Utah Disaster Specialists, which undertakes many Lehi Utah sewage cleanup jobs, traced the issue to a faulty sewage drain that had a low spot in the line. The low spot meant that the sewage would sit and fester in the line. According to the company, this represents a clear fault in the construction of the line.

The job is currently on hold until a dispute over payment is resolved. The landlord expects the tenants to pay for half of the repair even though the fault is not theirs. The tenants are currently out of work until the matter is resolved. While the dispute is being mediated, the line faces the ongoing hazard of sewage festering in the line and backing up into the home again.

Daryl Olsen, Owner of Utah Disaster Specialists, says, “This is potentially a very serious health hazard that impacts anyone who comes into the home. Festering, raw sewage needs professional cleanup to remove harmful bacteria. Having found the problem, it is clear that it is a fault in the construction of the sewage line, which is outside the tenants’ responsibility. That harmful bacteria could spread throughout the entire home, causing a much bigger issue for the landlord in the future, as the delay will impact floors, walls and even the HVAC unit. Making the home livable again is our main priority when dealing with situations like this. The longer the sewage backup remains in its current state, the greater the likelihood that it will negatively impact someone’s health.”

Olsen continues, “In situations like this, professionals like us who are simply trying to get the problem fixed at affordable rates are powerless to help resolve the issue. All we can say is to check your lease and find out if there has been any history of sewage problems with the property in the past—and how that was dealt with. Having a healthy relationship between landlords and tenants may seem impossible at times but, in a crisis like this, it is essential.”

This is the time of year when many sewage line issues may begin to show. In low temperatures, waste takes longer to degrade. If a drainage system becomes a victim of the harsh, cold weather conditions, pipes inside and outside a home can be affected. Any amount of frozen water could obstruct the flow, trapping raw sewage that will mix with further water flow from the home to the blockage. In critical situations, pressure from frozen water could crack or burst pipes.

Olsen states, “Having a low point in the sewage line like this situation in Lehi means that there is always water in the low point. That means there is always water that could freeze and cause more repair issues. If the raw sewage and water burst the line, the impact on the environment may also need to be assessed to determine if harmful bacteria have leached into the ground. This situation is unfortunate. We would always recommend that the situation is dealt with swiftly, with all due care and attention to help prevent further damage.”
