SeboCalm, based in Or Yehuda, Israel, has announced that they are introducing their sensitive skin care line. It was developed by two pharmacists back in 1990 when they realized many people needed something for sensitive and redness prone skin. Thus, all of the products in the line, like a redness relief face moisturizer, are hypoallergenic and have been dermatologically tested for sensitive skin. The SeboCalm products have been optimized over the last 30 years and have become well-known among dermatologists and customers. It was only lately that these became available on Amazon for US customers.
In a blog post titled, “How to Manage Sensitive Skin,” SeboCalm defines sensitive skin. It says, “The term ‘sensitive skin’ is an umbrella term for a range of problems and conditions such as psoriasis, seborrhea, atopic dermatitis, sensitivities to particular substances, redness, peeling skin and pimples. People with sensitive skin report persistent irritation and itchiness that beyond posing an aesthetic problem, these symptoms have a negative impact on their quality of life.”
Some people with sensitive skin are affected during extreme weather conditions or transitional seasons. Also, stress can trigger sensitivities in some people, which makes their skin sensitive in times of stress. And for some, it occurs after they have undergone cosmetic treatment like deep peeling or laser hair removal. In those situations, their skin should be regarded as sensitive and special skin care regimens should be used to treat their skin.
It is important to note that the process of creating sensitive skin products, such as the sensitive skin face toner, for example, is highly regulated. The ingredients have to be carefully chosen to ensure the meet the requirements of the most sensitive and vulnerable skin. Thus, skincare products designed for sensitive skin often only contain carefully chosen, pure, fragrant oils that don’t cause irritation. In contrast, non-hypoallergenic skincare products usually contain around 100 different ingredients.
For instance, a face soap for sensitive skin should not contain any sulfates or parabens. Studies have found that sulfates can irritate sensitive skin and may also cause acne and clog pores. The sulfates in skin care products are basically detergents. They are surfactants, which means they cause frothy lather to be produced, making it easier to remove dirt, oil, and other chemical from the face or skin. This is usually in the form of sodium lauryl sulfate or SLS and is generally considered to be a safe ingredient of cosmetic products. The problem is that they could be too effective in removing oil from the skin, leaving it dry and brittle. Plus, people with sensitive skin cannot tolerate them.
With regards to parabens, these are included in skincare products not for their cleansing effects. These are non-natural chemicals and are added to act as preservatives or to make the product have a much longer shelf life. Studies have shown that parabens can cause allergic reactions, an increase in estrogen production, premature aging, and possible interference with the endocrine system. Parabens have been observed to have the ability to deeply penetrate the skin and interfere with the normal functioning of the hormones.
