Patuxent Signature Flies, based in Columbia, Maryland, has announced that owner Sean Beck has published another blog post on the site that describes the day he went fishing with his son for Patuxent river trout. His goal was to have some one-on-one time with his son and to catch a few wild adult brown trout above Mullinix Mill Rd. at the Upper Patuxent river.

At first, they were not able to find any trout in any of holes that they first went to although they were able to catch some fallfish. They reached Sean Beck’s favorite spot but were only able to catch some large fallfish using the brown tungsten bugger #10. Later in the afternoon, his wife called him because it was past the boy’s nap time. He decided to make one last cast with the black euro jig bugger #8. He was finally able to catch a 17” brown trout after some struggle. After admiring the sizeable fish, they sent it back to the hole. Sean Beck says, “Although it was a bit disappointing at first, we surely had some fun and excitement when we got the heaviest Patuxent brown trout that I’d ever caught. This adventure also allowed us to try our various streamer flies. What we found was that for this particular adventure, the brown tungsten bugger #10 and the black euro jig bugger #8 worked but the squirmy worm #12 and the sexy walt’s worm #14 did not. The fishing gear that we brought along was an 8’ 4wt, 7.5’ 3x leader (9’ 6x for the nymphs).”

Patuxent Signature Flies offers various kinds of bugs for fly fishing. Sean Beck likes to make those artificial flies with various designs. There are three primary types of flies and he makes them all. These are the dry flies, streamers, and nymphs. The most common are the dry flies, which are constructed to look like flying insects that usually land and float on the water. The nymphs are artificial aquatic creatures, mostly larvae, that often float at or just below the surface of the water. The streamers are also artificial aquatic creatures that are much larger than the nymphs and it was this type that Sean Beck used to try and catch Patuxent river trout.

In a previous press release, Patuxent Signature Flies had announced their introduction of the Tungsten Bugger 6 Pack for trout streamer fishing. Other streamer flies available from Patuxent Signature Flies include the Jiggy Squirrel 3 Pack, Panfish Candy, Balanced Bugger, Meat Whistle, Hair Wing Streamer, Half & Half Clouser, Pine Squirrel Streamer, Bunker Bunker, and Shad Dazzler.

For nymphs, Patuxent Signature Flies has the Walt’s 6 Pack, San Juan Worm, Greasy Goods, and Patuxent Pack. For freshwater fishing, they offer the Jiggy Squirrel 3 Pack, Walt’s 6 Pack, Tungsten Bugger Pack, Balanced Bugger, San Juan Worm, Greasy Goods, Patuxent Pack, Meat Whistle, Hair Wing Streamer, Pine Squirrel Streamer, and Bunker Buster. For saltwater fly fishing, they offer the Panfish Candy, Half & Half Clouser, and Shad Dazzler. They also offer supplies for euro nymphing. These include the Euro Leader, Jiggy Squirrel 3 Pack, Walt’s 6 Pack, Greasy Goods, and Patuxent Pack.

Sean Beck recalls how he had experienced consistent success with the use of the different styles of flies that he was tying back in 2017. It was during that time that he decided to found Patuxent Signature Flies in order to share his successful flies with other anglers. Mostly, he and his fly fishing friends had gained a lot of successful experience with those flies that have subsurface patterns and he mostly makes flies that are of this type.
