Sunsella, a company based in Las Vegas, Nevada, that offers home and kitchen products online, has announced that Amazon has decided to eliminate the fee for its Amazon Fresh 2-hour fresh food delivery service for members of its Prime loyalty program. Customers just need to hit a certain minimum order level, which depends on the market. For instance, for Chicago, the minimum purchase order for fresh food delivery is $35. For orders less than $35, there will be a flat fee of $4.99.
The Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods Market delivery services are currently available in almost 2,000 cities. Amazon also plans to make its local Whole Foods inventory available online. Previously, there was a monthly fee of $14.99 for the program. Those who are already Amazon Fresh subscribers can immediately get their groceries delivered for free. However, Amazon Prime members who have not purchased through Amazon Fresh before will need to register on Amazon and wait for an invite.
Amazon’s move was in response to the growing competition from other large merchants. For instance, Target offers free deliveries for fresh food for orders that exceed $35 to those who are subscribers of its Shipt service. Walmart had previously launched in June 2019 its Delivery Unlimited program which offers unlimited grocery deliveries for a monthly fee of $12.95 or an annual fee of $98.
