Sunsella, a company based in Las Vegas, Nevada, has announced that American Dream, which is a megamall and entertainment complex, has recently opened in East Rutherford, New Jersey. This gigantic dream project of converting a huge swath of swamp land in New Jersey was conceived more than two decades ago, when Amazon was only selling books online and the iPhone still didn’t exist. After several fits and starts, and several billion dollars spent, the American Dream has finally officially opened its doors to the public to become the second biggest mall in the US, and third largest in North America.
The American Dream has 3 million square feet of leasable space dedicated to more than a dozen entertainment attractions, such as a 16-story indoor ski slope, water park, roller coaster, and later on, 450 food, retail and specialty shops. However, the $64 question is who will be going to this gigantic shopping mall and entertainment complex. Consumers now have iPhones and smartphones, where they can do their shopping without ever leaving home or wherever they are. Statistics has shown that overall traffic to malls, which has been rising in the late 1990s, has decreased by 10 percent since.
Furthermore, a report from Credit Suisse that was published in 2017 had predicted that up to 25 percent of the shopping malls will be shutting down by 2022 because of the rising popularity of online shopping and a series of store closings. It should also be noted that only nine malls have been built since 2015.
Nevertheless, American Dream expects to attract about 40 million visitors in its first year, of which entertainment will be responsible for 50 percent of the visitors. Attractions include an aviary and a bunny field. There will also be a number of amenities such as dog day care and a luxury wing, where shoppers can sample some caviar and sip champagne while waiting for their purchases to be wrapped. Two hotels with a total of 3,500 rooms will also be built alongside the complex.
The Canada-based mall and entertainment conglomerate Triple Five took over the project in 2011 from two developers, who had initially called the project Xanadu. The project broke ground in 2004 but got delayed for a number of years until it was temporarily shelved in 2009 as a result of the financial crisis. Triple Five changed the name of the project to American Dream with the idea that it will serve as a community hub for locals and tourists.
