Anaheim, California - As part of its Alumni Program, the Lighthouse Treatment Center, a drug and alcohol recovery facility in Anaheim, CA, hosted ‘Art Night’ on September 7, 2019. Attendees were able to create personalized wooden memorabilia that allowed them to show off their unique personalities and explore their creative sides.

For many people, creating art is a way to express their thoughts and feelings. Whether it’s painting, drawing, coloring or crafting, it serves as an outlet to release emotions that words or actions may not be able to describe. Several studies suggest that art therapy can support addiction recovery by fostering a healing environment, relieving stress, and helping people channel their emotions.

For these reasons, the Lighthouse Treatment Center incorporated art therapy in the roster of activities designed for its alumni. Jocel Bibera, alumni coordinator of the Lighthouse said that gathering their former residents for an evening of DIY art is a way to introduce new passions and hobbies in recovery. The session was held on campus and was conducted in partnership with Life Expressions Décor with the help of two facilitators, La Donna and Amy.

“Art Night is an opportunity for our Lighthouse community to tap into their creativity in a relaxed and supported environment. All the attendees gave positive feedback about Art Night and we are looking forward to hosting another session soon. We want to thank La Donna and Amy from Life Expressions for facilitating this event with our alumni and making it a memorable experience,” said Bibera.

During the art session, La Donna and Amy provided all the materials needed and guided the attendees on what to do to come up with a finished product. The newbie artists can then take home their completed memorabilia.

Amy from Life Expressions said that working with people in recovery is a meaningful experience for her. She said, “I love what I do! It is more than a job, it is a gift. I get to help people express themselves through art while having so much fun in the process.”
