Anaheim, California (September 25, 2019) – As part of its Alumni Program, the Lighthouse Treatment Center hosted former residents, staff, and guests on a trip to the OC Ropes Course on September 21, 2019. The OC Ropes Course is one of the largest courses in the state where visitors can scale, jump, swing, and zip through cargo nets, rope loop bridges, and a host of aerial obstacles. The Lighthouse conducted the activity in partnership with ‘Living Life In Recovery’, an adventure company specializing in experiential treatment for substance abuse.

Balancing 60 feet above the ground while getting through a challenging obstacle rope course may be an unusual activity for people going through addiction recovery. However, for alumni members of the Lighthouse Treatment Center, a drug and alcohol recovery facility in Anaheim California, going on a thrilling adventure like this creates an opportunity for them to empower themselves and build self-confidence.

According to Jocel Bibera, Alumni Coordinator of the Lighthouse, the activity serves as a one-of-a-kind therapy for their alumni.

“The high ropes course is unique because it drives our alumni to face their fears and challenge the negative voices in their heads. It then encourages them to move forward, make decisions, and overcome these physical obstacles. Once they complete the course, they can feel accomplished and proud of themselves. Our partner company, Living Life In Recovery, then documents in the Lighthouse electronic medical record the reactions and learning experiences that the clients encounter, ” shared Bibera.

Bibera added that the high ropes activity aims to foster community building and promote sober fun while in recovery. “Going on a high ropes activity also encourages team building and at the same time, it’s an enjoyable way to spend a day with new friends.”

Samantha W., a Lighthouse alumni, agreed that completing the high ropes course is a rewarding experience especially for people struggling with substance abuse.

“The high ropes course was amazing. Not only was it fun but it was physically and mentally challenging. The fear of falling even though you were supported is a great metaphor for the program. Even though we deal with life on life’s terms and are scared to fail at times, the fellowship around will always support you and walking through it is beautiful and rewarding just like when you zip line off the course and accomplish it,” said Samantha.
