According to the CDC, West Nile Virus, or WNV, is the leading cause of mosquito-borne disease in the continental United States and is most commonly caused by the bite of an infected mosquito. Cases of WNV occur during mosquito season; starting early in the summer and continuing through fall. While there are no vaccines to prevent, or medications to treat, West Nile Virus in people, unfortunately, most people infected with West Nile virus do not get sick. About 1 in 5 people who are infected develop a fever and other symptoms and about 1 out of 150 infected people develop a serious, sometimes fatal, illness.

John Mitchell, a representative for Backyard Bug Patrol, says, “With a name like ‘West Nile Virus’, you might think you are safe because you are here in America and the West Nile Virus must only be an issue in the West Nile, right? That is unfortunately not the truth. WNV is a very prevalent issue in the United States. York County in Virginia tests for mosquito borne illnesses and sprays on Saturdays during mosquito season and, recently, a mosquito pool tested positive for West Nile Virus.”

Mitchell continues, “You need to be wary about WNV during mosquito season. That’s from summer to fall. Summer ends this month, but you aren’t necessarily safe. Many cases of West Nile Virus have been reported in the fall, so we here in Beallsville, MD and Montgomery are not completely out of the woods yet. But that doesn’t mean you can’t be safe at all.”

According to Mitchell, WNV can be prevented by wearing long, loose, and light-colored clothing and limiting outdoor exposure between dusk and dawn. He also adds that it is prudent to check window and door screens to ensure that mosquitoes cannot enter one’s home, and to use insect repellants. There are also additional methods for mosquito prevention, such as turning over/removing containers where water can collect, eliminating standing water on tarps or flat roofs, cleaning out birdbaths, wading pools and swimming pools, roof gutters, and downspout screens. Mitchell adds, “Of course, on top of all that, you should also consider calling Backyard Bug Patrol. We are experts in eradicating and controlling mosquitoes in your backyard, making it a safe place for you and your loved ones.” More information about West Nile Virus prevention and protection against mosquitoes can be found here: https://backyardbugpatrol.com/maryland/montgomery/west-nile-virus-beallsville-md.
