Reform, Ala. – The state of Alabama is seeing massive shifts in the industry of private bail bonds and how it affects those in need of them. Most recently, new legislation has been passed into effect to regulate the bail bondsmen in Pickens County as well as across the state.

The new law is aimed to require all individuals who work in the industry of bail bonds to be licensed by the state. As it stands currently, it is not required in the state of Alabama and many who are new to the profession are often unsure what to do in certain situations, creating issues in the jails and courts across the state.

Effective September 1st, the state will give the regulations of licensing to a Professional Bail Bond Board. On top of ensuring proper licensing of bail agents in Pickens County and across Alabama, the board will create and implement annual training courses and, if necessary, hand out penalties to those not in compliance with the new regulations.

Prior to the new legislation, an individual was not required to have a state license to be in the industry. The Alabama Department of Insurance (ALDoI) oversaw the licensing of bail bonding companies. According to their website, www.aldoi.gov, the process of becoming a licensed bail agent consists of taking a 20 hour course on bail bonds as well as meeting several requirements such as:

Must be a U.S. Citizen.

Must be 18 years of age or older.

Clean Criminal record (no felonies).

Must have a net worth sufficient to cover a surety agreement.

Must provide a corporate surety bond of $25,000 minimum, which must be approved by the probate judge of each county in which the individual wishes to operate as a bail bondsman if operating independently.

As the state legislatures continue their efforts to unify and organize the commercial bail industry, additional requirements or changes should be expected over the next several months.
