Free Range Camping, an online magazine based in Eumundi, Queensland, Australia, has announced that they have recently posted an article on their blog. The article is titled “Wiki Camps vs Free Range Camping. What Is the Difference?” and it responds to common question on whether the Free Range Camping magazine is similar to the Wiki Camps magazine. In the article, they explain that the short answer to the question is no, but they do have some similarities.

Rob Catania, spokesperson for Free Range Camping, says, “Our name ‘Free Range Camping’ was chosen to represent the freedom we experienced when camping. No matter if it was free or paid. In fact, some of the best experiences we have had have been those that we paid for and got to stay at some of the most exotic locations in Australia. Wiki Camps is a great app, and we have used it ourselves in the past. Like FRC, it provides a directory of campsites all around Australia. However, there are many other differences between Wiki Camps and FRC which are outlined in our recent blog post.”

Both Free Range Camping and Wiki Camps have apps that can be readily obtained through iOS or Android. Both apps have a user friendly interface but Wiki Camps permits only one version of its paid app to be utilised per device. In contrast, Free Range Camping permits one version to be utilised over three separate devices, which makes it convenient for couples to use the app on individual smartphones as well as a tablet. Free Range Camping also has a free online version of its directory on desktop computers and laptops, whether using Windows or iOS operating systems.

The blog post also points out that a wiki is a collection of data provided by a community of users and this is what is available from Wiki Camps. The problem is that there is no certainty about the accuracy and reliability of the data. For instance, there is no assurance that the campsites nominated in Wiki Camps are actually approved campsites or are just gravel pits on the side of the road. Gravel pits and unapproved campsites may be ideal for short stop overs, assuming that campers are not moved or are fined by local authorities for camping in unauthorised locations.

On the other hand, the data provided by Free Range Camping is only sourced from the owners of campsites or related government authorities or departments. For example, they have connections with each state National Parks and Transport Department office such that data is provided directly to Free Range Camping, thus ensuring the accuracy and authenticity of the data. Wiki Camps has more listings but the ones provided by Free Range Camping are assured to be genuine, authorised campsites with the latest possible information.

Meanwhile, while the Wiki Camps Australia app has a price with a free seven-day trial period before purchase, Free Range Camping offers a free version that people can use forever. The free version of the app has all the campsites and RV related businesses but has no weather overlay, membership card or discounts. Premium Club Membership is distinct from the app because it offers discounts and many more benefits.

With regards to campsite information, Wiki Camps offers a brief outline for each campsite with only a limited description about the site. There are separate tabs for additional info, including a Comments tab, which contains comments about each site from users. In contrast, Free Range Camping provides a factual description of each campsite, describing what is found at the site and what is unique about it, whenever it is possible. Where possible, a description is also provided on how to get to a particular site. Most of the listings also include a “Things to Do” section, which includes attractions not just on the site also in the nearby area.

Those who require more information about free camps Australia campers can enjoy going to can visit the Free Range Camping website or contact them by telephone or via email.
