Senior Care Center has announced that they have recently published an informative article to show people the costs that are involved for the care of older parents and how expensive it can be. The longer people live, the higher the chance that they will need to move into one of various kinds of long term care facilities. Unfortunately, these assisted living facilities are often relatively expensive. These assisted living costs will be dependent on the level of care that is required. And for those with severe medical problems, including Alzheimer’s disease, the expenses can be very high.

Senior Care Center representative Casey Ryeback says, “While long term care is available for people with all kinds of disabilities, it’s most commonly associated with seniors. Around 63% of long term care residents are over 65. And for these people, there’s a lifetime probability of 68% that at some point, the person will become unable to independently handle at least two activities of daily living (ADLs). This can include things like bathing oneself, preparing meals, and handling bills and other financial matters. People will need to be present to help them in these ADLs and this can be costly.”

In another article, also published by Senior Care Center, that can be found at https://www.girlsspecial.com/tips-for-caring-elderly-parents/, tips are provided on caring for elderly parents. The article points out that for some adult children, they may have to assume the role of primary caregiver for their parents who are over 65. Thus, they usually help their elderly parents with housework, various repairs, and errands.

When making the decision for the use of an assisted living facility, adult children will need to discuss this possibility with everyone involved in the decision. This means talking with their elderly parents. The discussion will focus on the needs of the parents and, of course, the cost of assisted living facilities.

An important aspect to consider is the level of care that is required by the elderly parents. Over time, the elderly parents may need more intensive care, especially if they are showing signs of Alzheimer’s disease. Adult children may want to discuss this with a geriatric care manager or a social worker. They can reduce the stress involved in these preparations by using technology, creating a list of the various necessary tasks and resources, and working with other people.

There are various types long term care facilities and the costs will be different for each. These include retirement communities, assisted living homes, memory care facilities, and skilled nursing facilities.

Retirement communities are not really assisted living per se but they may suffice for certain people. These are age-restricted housing developments and the homes are usually for sale and not for rent. These are often provided with various amenities such as swimming pools, clubhouses, and more. They are a great choice for socially inclined elderly people who simply want to downsize their home because all of their children now have their own homes.

Assisted living homes are apartment-style facilities with several levels of care and assistance provided for the residents. Costs will depend on the level of care and assistance. However, these facilities are usually not equipped for intensive nursing care for those with serious medical issues.

For those with age-related or neurodegenerative memory loss and cognitive impairment, memory care facilities can offer the necessary special services but with the matching higher costs. And for those with other medical issues, there are the skilled nursing facilities.
