ARLINGTON, Virginia – National Police Support Fund attended the National Troopers Coalition conference in Scottsdale, Arizona. Over 100 members from across the nation were in attendance.
National Police Support Fund leadership was able to meet one-on-one with organization leadership and state presidents and gain first-hand knowledge of the troopers’ issues and concerns. Like many law enforcement organizations, the troopers are concerned about shrinking budgets, low recruitment, and inadequate training to remain effective in a quickly evolving world.
The highlight presentation of the conference was by Carrie Lane, CEO of the California Association of Highway Patrolmen. Lane discussed the challenges and threats that autonomous vehicles pose and how laws may need to evolve over the next 10-15 years. As autonomous car usage increases on our nation’s highways, highway patrolmen will face challenges keeping drivers safe and ensure that laws and regulations are adequate to address modern challenges. “One of the Challenges of policing is to be agile and adaptable to changing situations,” Simon Lewis, National Police Support Fund Executive Director, said. “This is a great opportunity to strive towards gaining the information, training, and tactics required to stay ahead of the technology curve and keep citizens safe.”
The National Troopers Coalition boasts over 42,000 members across 47 organizations and 43 states, and has been active in representing state patrol officers for over 40 years.
