Toronto, Ontario based Waldorf Academy Toronto recently released a report discussing the importance of singing with young children. It is thought to improve their language and communication skills, along with well as promote their overall brain development.

“Singing with children can have huge developmental advantages. It is an effective way of self-expression, and it helps children advance in their cognitive, emotional, and physical development. Singing also accelerates brain development, particularly in the areas of language acquisition and reading skills, whilst also helping kids develop self-confidence and social skills more easily,” says Jennifer Deathe from Waldorf Academy.

As noted on the academy’s website, the connection of the muscles surrounding the ear with those of the larynx is called the “eustachian tubes,” and it’s more attuned in young children, which is why they are more sensitive to higher frequencies and pitches. The blog explains that when a child hears a word, their ethereal body hears the same, so it is important to speak or sing with integrity in order for the resonance to be heard and absorbed fully. They also state that Waldorf Academy is well-known for its unique music programs that teach children speak with their true voices, and encourage them to freely express their emotions through music. Deathe says that in addition to the two major moods of music, major and minor keys, the pentatonic mood captures the airy openness of a child’s voice, and when properly harnessed, it does not only develop a child’s voice, but it also helps to improve their listening skills.

“If you’ve ever had the opportunity to hear a child singing when they think no one is listening, you will have discovered the purity and clear resonance of their voice.,” says Deathe. She also mentions that kids can be uncanny at picking up on the beauty of the world around them, and how that inspires their young voices is something adults and modern music are often lacking. “It is very important to expose a child to quality and meaningful music because it allows them to channel their creativity, and preserve their innocent and spiritual connection to the universe,” she said.

Meanwhile, Deathe points out that it’s perfectly normal for parents to be picky when choosing a preschool for their children. After all, she explains that one of the key things that can greatly affect a child’s natural singing brilliance is when they imitate adult voices, especially those of their teachers. She states that there have been books written about the subject matter, but the faculty of most schools do not not have the time or inclination to research voice control, vocal development and their implications to children. “There are a lot of resources that provide useful information on how to effectively utilize singing and music through the stages of child development. At Waldorf Academy, we are pleased to inform parents that our teachers strictly adhere to these correct practices in order to deliver the very best vocal instruction to our students.”

Education shouldn't be a race, but a journey, and that's what my two daughters have had at the Waldorf Academy.”

My kids were fully-supported each and every step of the way, and they were nurtured by truly the most caring and committed teachers we could have ever hoped for.
