Many people are unprepared to face the costs and other requirements of health care in their old age, according to Senior Care Center. As people get older, health issues become more and more serious, while the cost of treating them increases as well. “Senior citizens, especially those with conditions that affect their mental faculties, require specialized care from qualified individuals, which is often very expensive,” said Senior Care Center, in a post on its Sr Care Blog.

While Americans understand that people require some sort of medical aid as they grow older, many do not believe they will need it themselves. However, according to some sources, over 70% of Americans older than 65 will require some sort of long term care. This means that very few Americans are actually prepared to pay for the medical assistance they will need in their old age.

The Director of Polling for the Associated Press stated that, “Very few people have arranged to pay for, or even to think, about their own needs. Most haven’t even taken the basic step of talking to family members about their preferences.” According to RBC Wealth Management-US, most respondents in a survey about getting older believed they would need an average of $2,700 dollars per year for health care after retirement. However, the real estimated cost came up to around $5,700 for one person and over $11,000 for a married couple.

Michael Armstrong, CEO of RBC Wealth Management-US, stated that, “Health care is one of the largest expenses we will face in retirement. If not properly accounted for, these costs can derail even the most solid retirement plan.” These costs also increase with age. A couple between sixty five and seventy four might need an average of $13,000 a year while those above eighty five might need $39,000 annually.

The reason for this lack of preparedness has been attributed to a number of different things by different sources, with each individual questioned having a different answer. Some prefer not to consider the prospect of aging, fearing the loss of independence and having to rely on their families, or fearing the eventual need to leave their own homes and move into a nursing home. This refusal to acknowledge that they will one day get older leaves a number of aging Americans mentally, emotionally and, perhaps most important of all, financially unprepared.

While it is impossible to avoid aging, it is possible to make the transition easier and remain as healthy as possible. Women Magazine, for instance, offers, “Ten health tips that seniors can easily follow so they can live a healthier life for longer.” The first of these is to quit smoking. “This is one of the most important things when it comes to combating aging. Smoking is not good for your body, because it causes cancer, heart failure, and strokes,” noted the magazine.

Eating well and keeping active are two more suggestions that the magazine had for staying healthy. Women Magazine urges readers to try and do something to help keep fit every day, and to ensure that they choose something that they enjoy doing. This will help in maintaining strength, balance and flexibility as well as aiding cardiovascular health. Combined with physical activity, a healthy diet can help make aging less of an issue. A number of illnesses can be controlled or prevented by eating healthy and exercising, and Vitamin D and calcium supplements can help prevent illnesses like osteoporosis in women. In addition to this, exercise and a healthy diet can help in maintaining a healthy weight. “Extra weight can lead to an increase in the risk of illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure,” stated the magazine. However, it is possible to control one’s weight through diet and exercise.

As one ages, falling becomes a more serious occurrence, and Women Magazine urges people to try and take as many precautions as possible to avoid this. As one gets older, it is extremely important to stay up to date with health screenings and immunizations, including regular vision, dental, and hearing check-ups.

Lastly, the magazine urges readers to learn to manage their stress as well as remain sexually active. Both can have a healthy effect on an aging body.
