According to Jason Nenadov, it is the rising cost of real estate and other life necessities that has led to an increasing demand for multi-gen homes in the U.S. “Many homeowners favor multi-gen living because it lessens the expenses of the different families in the house,” he explained.

Jason believes that as more families prefer living under the same roof with their extended families, they must thoughtfully consider what each member of the family wants and needs. “Comfort, privacy and space are key elements in a home, especially if you plan to live in a multi-gen house where there are more people in the house,” he said.

He also stressed the importance of having plenty of flexible spaces in the home, such as rooms that can be easily converted for either personal or communal use. Examples of these spaces are bedrooms that can be converted into offices and living rooms that are not only for relaxation but entertainment as well.

In his blog, Jason advised homebuyers who are planning to live with their elderly parents to find a home that has multiple master suites. “If you’re going to live in the house with your elderly parents, they will be much more comfortable in a master suite that’s on the ground floor. This allows them easier access and better privacy, making them feel like they have their own space,” he said.

In the absence of multiple master suites, Jason said, homebuyers may look for homes that offer in-law suites, which are like mini-apartments attached to the house with their own separate entrances and kitchens. “If you live with your in-laws or parent, separate entrances make them feel like they still have control over their own lives, and they can always have a space for themselves,” Jason explained.

He added that in order to accommodate all members of the family, a multi-gen home should have large outdoor and storage spaces. “When you live in a home with a lot of people, you want enough storage for all your needs. Storage spaces secure your belongings and make sure they are well-organized,” he said.
