Joshua S. Rovner, MD - Progressive Spine & Orthopaedics, has announced that people in New Jersey can become free from back pain with the various services that they provide, including robotic spine surgery. He stresses that when conservative treatments of back pain fail, the latest breakthroughs in spinal surgery can help.

Dr. Joshua Rover says, "In recent years there have been a great many developments made in the field of medicine, but none is greater than robotic spinal surgery. The Mazor Renaissance Robot has become the epitome of precision and safety when it comes to neurosurgery in general and spinal surgery in particular."

Dr. Joshua Rovner explains that in traditional spinal surgery, the surgeon has to determine the appropriate placement for screws with the help of x-rays that were taken before the operation. However, during the actual surgical operation, the surgeon must depend on his judgment and feel to be able to position the screws appropriately. Unfortunately, x-rays do not offer a complete picture and there is the possibility of placing the screws in the wrong place and even a minor error can have serious consequences, like pain, decreased mobility, and even paralysis.

Although there may be some risks, robotic spinal surgery is more accurate and safer compared to traditional spinal surgery. Accuracy of the positioning of the screws is within 1 mm. This results not just in minimizing the recovery time and the pain experienced by the patient, but it also reduces the possibility of post-operative complications.

The first step in the treatment plan at Progressive Spine & Orthopaedics is the consultation. Patients are free to ask any questions they have after having their spinal condition diagnosed. These spinal conditions include general back pain, sciatic nerve pain, lumbar disc herniation, cervical disc herniation, lumbar stenosis, spinal tumors, spinal fractures, and others.

They offer various kinds of spinal surgery. These include robotic spine surgery, anterior cervical discectomy and fusion, cervical disc replacement, minimally invasive lumbar discectomy, lumbar spinal fusion, revision spine surgery, and laser spine surgery. As discussed above, robotic spinal surgery offers the advantage of being more precise and accurate, and making spinal surgery safer and less invasive. Specifically, the benefits are: increased precision in the positioning of the screws; decreased rate of permanent nerve damage; lesser complications and speedier recovery time; and reduction of repeat x-rays, which means less exposure to radiation.

Meanwhile, an anterior cervical discectomy and fusion surgery is for the treatment of disc herniation in the neck after it has been found that nonsurgical treatments have not solved the problem. In this procedure, all or part of the herniated disc in the neck will be removed, after which the vertebral bones around the eliminated disc are surgically joined. This procedure has the goal of relieving neck and arm pain that is due to a herniated disc or degenerative disc disease.

For those discs in the neck that have been damaged over time, the surgical procedure is cervical disc replacement. The damaged discs will be replaced by artificial discs. However, it is only recommended after exhausting the different nonsurgical treatments that can correct the problem. The goal of this procedure is to relieve the pain felt in the arms, shoulders and neck as a result of disc herniation and degenerative disc disease.

Meanwhile, for lumbar disc herniation, a minimally invasive lumbar discectomy or microdiscectomy may be used after other noninvasive treatments have failed. In this procedure, part of the damaged disc in the lower back that is irritating the nerve is removed. One of the key benefits is that it only needs minimal cutting or stripping away of muscles from the spine. Instead, only a small incision is made and specialized equipment is used to gain access to the affected area. The goal of the procedure is to relieve the pain, weakness and numbness in the legs, buttocks, lower back, or hips.
