Augusto Beato of Portland SEO emphasized the need for the United States to put more investment and research in smart shipping to get a bigger share of the global autonomous shipping industry, which is predicted to grow to $136 billion by 2030.

Beato was reacting to a report that U.K.'s Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) and Department for Transport (DfT) received a US $1.3 million grant to study new ways of regulating the autonomous and smart shipping industries to help them deliver new technologies to the traditional maritime sector.

The funding will see the creation of the Maritime Autonomy Regulation Lab, where regulators from the MCA and DfT can work with academia and support industry to investigate the best methods for regulating vessels operated remotely and autonomously.

It will promote on-water testing and flagship projects and help the U.K. grow its presence in the global marketplace.

The grant came from U.K.’s Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy’s Regulators’ Pioneer Fund.

Beato pointed out that automation will make shipping safer, more efficient, and less expensive.

"It is safer because more than 70 percent of marine accidents are the result of human error or interference. Furthermore, there will be less space required for crews thereby allowing more space for cargo," averred Beato. "The improved vessel efficiency, reliability, and availability could lead to a 20 percent total transportation cost reduction."

While most of the industry advancements are being done in Europe, Beato noted that there are also efforts in the United States to boost smart shipping. This includes the collaboration between Michigan Technological University and the Smart Ships Coalition, called the marine autonomy research site (MARS), to study and set ground rules for the use of autonomous marine vehicles on the Great Lakes.
