Destin Boating Club Receives Two Safety Program Awards Including SHARP

Legendary Marina, located in Destin, FL, has announced that it has the honor of recently receiving recognition from two distinct organizations to commend them for the development, administration, and oversight of their exemplary Safety Program. Legendary Marina has been presented with the Sunshine State Safety Recognition Award. They have also been accepted into the Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program, which is commonly referred to as SHARP.

The Sunshine State Safety Recognition Award is administered by USF SafetyFlorida, which is a service of the University of Southern Florida, College of Public Health. It is awarded to Florida's employers and employees who proactively and routinely engage in job safety. In order to be considered for this award, a business must undergo a comprehensive evaluation of the work site which includes an assessment of the safety management programs that are in place, a review of its safety rules and training practices, analysis of its internal safety inspections routines, as well as conducting personal interviews with their workers. In addition to the evaluation, the business should meet specific requirements regarding the receipt of certain citations that may be related to injury and exposure occurring within the previous 12 to 24 months. After a successful final consultation, the company is recommended to the program management to receive the award.

On their website, USF SafetyFlorida notes that the Florida employers earning the Sunshine State Safety Recognition Award represent a commitment to safety, saying, "It takes a team effort ... to integrate safety as an ongoing practice." According to USF SafetyFlorida, there are approximately only 40 businesses that earn this honor annually and "it is something your company will take great pride in."

The Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP) is administered by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Businesses that are accepted into the SHARP program must have successfully used OSHA's On-Site Consultation program which provides no-cost consultation services to address any hazards and improve the workplace safety and health. The business must also operate an exemplary safety program and have injury and illness rates that fall well below the national average in the industry. According to the United States Department of Labor, for a business to obtain acceptance into SHARP places that business in an elite status "that singles you out among your business peers as a model for worksite safety and health."

"It's not easy to get into the SHARP program," said Jeremy Holcomb, Vice President of Operations for the Legendary Boating Company. "Only twelve businesses in Florida carry the SHARP designation, and we are one of only three marinas in the nation to have received the SHARP designation."

Boating club membership includes exclusive, unlimited access to any of the boats in their fleet. The training is a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on practice intended to provide the members the skills and confidence to safely navigate the local waters in any of the fleet boats.
